Compelling Read,

Michael Blouin writes in a unique style with little snippets and thoughts that run through the minds of his characters. He takes reader into the life of children being raised in a dysfunctional family and inevitably the abuse of an alcoholic father.Haven is the older sibling, she is fiercely protective of her younger brother Chase, shielding him from his father's abuse best that she can. For the most part she is successful but she isn't able to keep him from the nighttime punishments he endures when his father takes him to the trains and forces him on the tracks making him wait there while the train barrels toward him leaving him mentally scarred for life. Having taken all the abuse she can Haven takes Chase and runs off in her father's car to the protection of their aunt Mary. Mary provides a soft place for them to land teaching them the meaning of a true family full of love and support for each other. The reader follows Haven and Chase through the trials they experience through to their adult lives, the loss of loved ones and the successes they are able to achieve. Blouin proves a talent that sets him apart from other writers with a pace that allows the reader to flow from one thought to the next in a fluid motion as the each character processes what is in their minds. In a style I would never have considered but thoroughly enjoyed I would definitely recommend this book as one to add to everyone's reading list. I expect great things to come to Blouin in the future.
