Product Description

From Amazon.com

Writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks) makes a huge leap in sophistication with this strong story about a comic-book artist (Ben Affleck) who falls in love with a lesbian (Joey Lauren Adams) and actually gets his wish that she love him, too. Their relationship is attacked, however, by his business partner (Jason Lee), who pulls a very unsubtle Iago act to cast doubt over the whole affair. The film has the same sense of insiderness as Clerks--this time, Smith takes us within the arcane, funny world of comic-book cultism--but the themes of jealousy, deceit, and the high price of growing up enough to truly care for someone make this a very satisfying movie. --Tom Keogh

Video Details

Chasing Amy is the third installment in the "New Jersey Trilogy" from award-winning writer-director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Dogma). Cult comic-book artist Holden (Ben Affleck) falls in love with fellow artist Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams), only to be thwarted by her sexuality, the disdain of his best friend Banky (Jason Lee), and his own misgivings about himself. Filled with Smith's unique ear for dialogue and insight into relationships, Chasing Amy offers a thoughtful, funny look at how perceptions alter lives, and how obsession and self-doubt skew reality.

2.0 out of 5 stars pffttt., Jun 6 2006
This review is from: Chasing Amy (VHS Tape)
Overall, the best part of this movie is when the faggy black militant character puts on a ridiculous performance of masculinity in order to display how manufactured it is.

Everything else is disappointing, especially considering Smith was tutored in Degrassi.
Arguments over the 'moral behavior' of Joey Lauren Adams or her precise place on the Kinsey scale did not however, inform my disappointment. No, our already homophobic culture, already bent on the primacy of men's sexual fulfillment over women's, did not need a movie about Ben Afflect 'converting' an ostensibly lesbian character. Perhaps Smith had the guts (or stupidity?) to have Holden suggest a threesome with another man, but I wonder if he would have the guts to do a movie about a gay man convincing an ostensibly straight one to come to bed with him? It wouldn't work though, because the movie depends on the idea of heterosexuality as the ultimate norm, the tree from which every story's branches must grow.
For most lesbians, leftover straight friends (male or female) as conservative as those 2 dudes are the kind you avoid outside of weddings and funerals...

1.0 out of 5 stars Huh?, Oct 17 2005

Ben Affleck managing to convert a lesbian? "Oh gee Mr. Affleck, I guess I wasn't a lesbian after all! You're so dreamy!" WTF? This movie is trash. It seems to exist to make Ben Affleck look like some big man. Yuck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith's Low Budget Masterpiece, July 4 2005
By Doug Turner (Brooklyn, NY) - See all my reviews
After the similarly funny novel, "The Losers' Club: Complete Restored Edition" by Richard Perez, Chasing Amy is the best Amazon purchase I made in a long time. Some people may say that this film is uneven, etc., but in my opinion there's so many great, heartfelt scenes that I can't seem to get enough of this flick, and I've taken to watching it over and over. Just think of the "confession scene" where Holden confesses his love -- I can't think of any film with such a heartfelt, soulful scene; and I love the scene where Alysa answers the Holden's question: "Why Me?" Then there's the great scene where Silent Bob tells the story of Amy. Amazing 'cause it's such a thoughtful scene but also funny. In short, I really need to recommend this movie to people who think Kevin Smith does nothing but make films full of dick and fart jokes. I say, yeah there are those jokes, but so much more to it! Pick up a copy of this great film, probably my favorite so-called romantic comedy of all time. And again I need to recommend "The Losers Club: Complete Restored Edition" -- very much related to this film.

Interesting but pretty improbable, and ultimately it will be unworkable. It should have been written as a tragedy instead it is a farce.
