When Sam Roberts's 2003 debut disc We Were Born in a Flame topped many critics' polls, it was an incredible feat for the new Canuck on the block. An even more impressive accomplishment was his subsequent triple win for Album, Rock Album, and Artist of the Year at the 2004 Juno Awards--truly rare for a first-timer. Having successfully conquered Canadian rock radio with past hits "Don't Walk Away Eileen" and "Where Have All The Good People Gone?" it would be easy to assume that Roberts would continue to follow the path of his previous disc, but it can honestly be said that Chemical City is an evolution both in style and substance.

Roberts admits to gleaning inspiration for this disc from records of the late '60s and early '70s--specifically The Band's Music From Big Pink and The Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street--and it shows. The disc's kickoff track and single "The Gate" brings the psychedelic sound to the forefront immediately; equally noteworthy is a jam-heavy eight-minute track called "Mind Flood," as well as the similarly explosive "The Bootleg Saint." One of Chemical City's high points is the rallying cry of "The Resistance," which finds Roberts passionately singing "Living, loving, swinging, ducking/We might fail, but we have to try/I poked my finger in the public eye." Deadheads and Phish phans, take note: Roberts may well be the next reason to jump in a VW van and hit the tour trail this summer. --Denise Sheppard

4.0 out of 5 stars Good follow-up to a stellar first album, April 13 2009

Sam Roberts produces another winner with this album. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as "We Were Born In A Flame" but that's not really a criticism since that album was so good it was really tough to follow. I still think the album is solid, true to itself and the band, has great songs and has staying power in my playlist just like its predecessor, and it did not disappoint me. I don't regret my purchase and it was definitely good enough that it made me go out and buy the next album to come from this quality artist.

well i've been waiting for this album for such a long time...it definately does not dissapoint...heres a review for each song.

THE GATE = 8.5/10 fast rocker, really sets the tune nicely! some people might complain about the length...but i think that's fine...my only complaint is the Nuge's teasing little solo, it should of went a lot longer

BRIDGE TO NOWHERE = great ballad, awesome riff, great lyrics 9/10

WITH A BULLET = one of my favorites, great rocker, awesome riff...but the solo at the end should of been longer 10/10

MIND FLOOD = like 2 songs...awesome start, love when it gets faster...but i don't like the 2 minutes of nothing, needs a complete guitar solo...will be AMAZING live 8.5/10

UPRISING DOWN UNDER = great ballad 10/10

MYSTIFIED HEAVY = this song is very mellow, great sound, cool riff...awesome chorus, you can hear the beatles influence 9/10

AADDITB = great song! cool riff, great chourus, awesome story 9.5/10

BOOTLEG SAINT = great rocker, sweet riff, would be the best to perform 10/10

THE RESISTANCE = this would make a great closer, a lot of fun..i love the Nuge rockabily licks in the backround of this 10/10

ASWCO = beautiful song, but i find a bit boring...will get better with time 9/10

overall...album will be twice as good live! but it's amazing here nonetheless...if you want a great breath of fresh air in popular music, check out sam roberts band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very solid album, April 29 2006
This review is from: Chemical City (Audio CD)
If you really liked the last album, not just for the singles - and you really appreciate Sam for the talented song writer that he is, you will absolutely love this 2nd album. To me, it is a lot better than the first album. The lyrics are a bit esoteric for most songs but the music is as good as ever - solid rock n roll song writing here. If you are a Sam Roberts fan, there's no need to ponder, this album will not disappoint you.
