4.0 out of 5 stars Throughout representation of IB Chemistry Feb 27 2013

Book was great with beautiful visual appearance, but had an irritating amount of typos. The book was basically written by two people and they clearly did not master all the subjects. Especially the more theoretical topics, like NMR, contained plain factual errors which, despite of several checkers, made their way to the printed edition. If one is looking for information on harder subjects (,for example those described in the option chapters), he/she should buy a more well-written book, like a one intended for undergraduate college students.

4.0 out of 5 stars Higher Level chemistry (Pearson) Feb 27 2013
By Dan TerBush - Published on Amazon.com
I used this when teaching HL chemistry at a IB school for 2 years and found it overall very good with some minor editing problems. There are issues with the way the standard pressure is represented i.e. they mention the new standard of 100 kPa but link the old volume of 22.4 dm3 to it for the molar volume of a gas. Sorry, but if you lower the pressure at constant temperature, guess what, the volume increases. Also, in their biochemistry section they show what they claim is an isoelectric focusing gel of separated proteins. What they actually show is and SDS-PAGE gel (separates based on size not charge) and its upside down to boot. There are also minor issues with the directions of the arrows in the energy level diagrams especially in the Born-Haber cycle figures.

I am being picky, 99.5% of the text is accurate. It's just when you notice small things that are mistakes in an overall excellent book they stand out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have have companion for the IB experience Jan 2 2012

The book is your key to get 6 and actually why not 7 if you are a good student. It contains everything you can ever need. Knowledge is composed in user-friendly way - by points following the syllabus - word for word. In addition to these, it contains lots of questions right from past IB exams. It is extremely important in subject like chemistry. At the end of the book there are answers and some tips and tricks for passing the exams in flying colors. Huge advantage is that its really well written - perfect mix of important, relevant knowledge, examples and some interesting facts to help you memorize.

With that book, It would be virtually possible to skip lessons and even though write tests on fantastic level (6 in my case). I am still amazed by the positive aspects of this book. Why not to write all science books as this one?!

PS Although it is no about the whole series (person biology has its better equivalent imo - Clegg Biology) the Chemistry HL for IB is simply a masterpiece !

Bottom line: In the right hands (ambitious student who hates boring black n white books), this book is the only thing except calculator that you would need to pass Chemistry HL examination on great level.
