“Exuberant, witty, and warmhearted, this first novel for children is a fine start.” ?Quill & Quire

Product Description

A harrowing, sexy, sly, subversive novel about an addictive love affair, an explosive relationship, a twisted storyteller, and a cherry car.

Locked in jail, a nameless narrator who signs himself “E” writes a series of letters to his girlfriend, identified only as “T.” Awaiting trial for the murder of his best friend’s father, E writes to T to explain what happened?and to convince her of his innocence. The story begins one summer weekend on Red Snake Lake when E takes T to the cottage of Harry Chup, the wealthy father of E’s high school friend, Teddy. Self-destructive and criminally-inclined, Teddy convinces E to get Harry to front them some cash to finance a film. But by Sunday afternoon, Harry is dead, and both Teddy and E are facing trials for first degree murder, where T will be the star witness for the Crown.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, fast, furiously funny!, July 1 2010
This review is from: Cherry Electra: A Novel (Paperback)
This is one of the most un-Canadian novels I have ever read. Now don't get me wrong: I love Canadian novels, and there is plenty of Canada in this novel, which is set in Toronto and in cottage country just north of Toronto. What we don't see as often as some of us would like in Canadian fiction is the sheer energy and brashness of this novel, the rolling wicked wordplay and wit, the reckless feckless utterly compelling trainwreck of a storyline, the grimy grimness and fantastically impolite glee. Oh, and the obscene amounts of cocaine consumed in under 200 pages. Read this and Russell Smith's excellent Girl Crazy for a cross-jab combo. Canada needs more Matt Duggan. Dude, get writing.
