2.0 out of 5 stars There are now better works available, Jun 3 2004

This review is from: Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games (Hardcover)
When Polgar's "Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games" first came out (in 1994), many chess coaches, including myself, thought of it as a great learning tool. I purchased a number of copies for my students to use. And although it is still a great tool, since its publication a number of excellent tactics manuals have come out and I no longer think of this work by Polgar as being one of the best. Many of these 5334 problems are seemingly artificial, they lack the feel of a real game (of coures, real games can get sort of bazaar looking). What would I recommend instead? Those at the top of my list would include: "Winning Chess Exercises for Kids" by Jeff Coakley (2004); "Combinational Motifs" by Maxim Blokh (2000); "The Times Winning Moves" by Raymond Keen & Byron Jacobs (2003); and "The ChessCafe Puzzle Book" by Karsten Muller (2004), just to name a few. Of course, the right book depends on one's own chess strength (and so, it will vary from person to person).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Entertaining Option, May 29 2004

This review is from: Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games (Hardcover)
This is an excellent entertaining book. Mr. Polgar came up with an interesting and comprehensive collection of compositions and miniature games that will keep yourself and your chess buddies entertained for many hours.
There are two things I would consider for future editions:
- In the miniature games section, the author should allow the reader to figure out the winning combination instead of simply putting the solution below the corresponding diagram.
- I was expecting to find more problems from the composition legend Sam Lloyd. I was a bit disappointed to find only a few of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Chess Books I've Not Read, Jan 27 2004

This review is from: Chess: 5334 Problems, Combinations, and Games (Hardcover)
If you want a wide range of challenging chess problems to match your level of skill in one place this is the book. And what a book it is! This is one of those works like OED and Encyclopedia Britanica that just stands out by it's size. I lug mine around to work, have the biceps to show it. The diagrams are large easy to read and very instructive. If you need lots of words this is not for you. If you want tons of practice solving problems improving your chess thinking run and buy this book. It's making a big difference in my game. Tactical ideas now pop into my head where only blunders existed.. I've worked through the first five hundred problems and didn't come up against one queen sacrifice.
