5.0 out of 5 stars Who Knew!!, Jul 24 2009
By Eleanor Ortiz (Vancouver BC) - See all my reviews

Although I am an avowed Broadway musical junkie I really didn't pay too much attention to Chess until I recently saw it on PBS. Just knowing Idina Menzel and Adam Pascal were in it was enough to get me to the gate but once I was in I discovered how much I'd been missing. It captured me immediately and kept me entranced to the very end. What a brilliant production!!! The cast was astonishing and I discovered that there were some numbers that I already knew but I wasn't aware they were from Chess. I've played this DVD obsessively every few days since and highly recommend it to anyone like me who loves Broadway but for some reason allowed this gem to slip by.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spectacular Rendition of "Chess", Jun 29 2009
By J. KWON "kwogni" (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For someone who haven't seen any of the previous stage productions of "Chess", this DVD was quite a treat.

The DVD comes with a booklet containing Tim Rice's memories of how "Chess" has evolved ever since the concept album was first released back in the early 1980's.

The concert in "Play All" mode is about 2 hours 15 minutes long, but has also been split into the 2 main acts (Act 1: 1979 Merano, Act 2: 1980 Bangkok). As for extras, there is a typical trailer but no secondary audio commentary during the concert. Subtitles, which display the lyrics as the singing progresses, are included and are a welcome feature.

I'm sure there have been many reviews aleady about this 2008 concert but the biggest highlights have to be Josh Groban's singing talents and the support of the London Philharmonic and West End Chorus throughout the concert.

Although Idina Menzel adds star power to this production, I can't help but think she was miscast in the role of Florence. She is unable to match Elaine Paige's performance on the original studio soundtrack although she does try admirably. After comparing these two artists, I realize now what a beautifully complex set of songs the trio of Benny Andersson, Tim Rice, and Bjorn Ulvaeus have produced.

Overall, if you are a fan of the original soundtrack, this concert will provide over 2 hours of solid entertainment. Don't miss out watching this DVD!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fills in the Story, Jul 17 2009
By pem (Nanaimo, BC Canada) - See all my reviews
As with any production of Chess, the performers will be measured against the original recording artists who have the unfair advantage of time and nostalgia. The music is great and the performances are on par with the original album for the most part with only a couple of exceptions. However, I didn't get the DVD to replace the music from the original album, but to fill in the gaps in the story. There is minimal story between the songs but the production on the DVD brings all the pieces together in one cohesive storyline true to the original concept. A huge bonus was the liner notes explaining the story of Chess from concept album, through various stage productions to the performance featured on the DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Original Concept Recording is Still Best
It is always good to see a show like this remounted, and given the problematic book, concert is great, but the casting was just not up to the material. Read more
