This is the first Chicken Soup for the Soul book that I have had the privilege to review - more to come. Given the season and the events which led to my becoming part of the 'Review Chicken Soup Books Family', there couldn't have been a more perfect book to start with! It's the best Chicken Soup book I've read thus far - and I've read many over the years. (But I may have said that before about one or two of them.) This special edition has 121 stories, ten more than these books usually have; stories that will either make you smile, wipe some tears or rejoice with the people telling them. There are stories about enjoying simple things, treasuring time with family, reaching out to those in need, all highlighting the magic and wonder of Christmas. A quote from the book expresses it like this: Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart. - Washington Irving.
One of the reasons I love and appreciate Chicken Soup books so much, is the fact that the stories are true and written by people from all walks of life, most who probably don't consider themselves authors. And anyone, anywhere has the chance to submit stories. Go for it!
Not that this is so important to the review, but I was half way through the book, when the Canadian in me went to the 'Meet Our Contributors' section. I had this strong urge to see how many Canadians grace the pages of this book. Many of the blurbs have a location where the contributor is from. Of those, I found only two Canadians. It's not like we don't have any inspiring stories to share - but first they have to be written, then submitted and ultimately chosen to go into the book. Maybe another time I'll find more Canadian content, eh?
In exchange for an honest review I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book by Shelton Interactive and Simon and Schuster Canada.
