One of my favorite stories is The Happy Book. It's about a woman who suffers from depression. It would be easy for her to just let it overtake her life but instead she started writing in a little notebook every night . . . one thing that made her happy during the day. It didn't have to be anything big. It could be something like "I found a parking spot right in front when I was running late." or "My husband came home early." This forced her to seek out the positive rather than dwell on the negative. And when she's having a particularly bad day she can look back on all the other happy moments in her life. What a great idea!
Sharing stories of individuals just like us and those that we know, the book helps us to see that happiness is not always about some lofty achievement. It can just be realizing your strengths, what you are good at and enjoy and how to be the person that you were truly meant to be.
This isn't to say that there will not be problems or even disappointments, but it does mean that those don't have to stop us from looking for our place in the world and walking in it. When you finish this book you will probably find yourself asking 'Can this really work for me?' The answer is yes, but you have to do what it takes to make it work for you. If you do, then you can find the happiness that others are enjoying today.
