When I bought this book I was expecting to read an epic story that spanned generations. Sadly, while this novel did span generations, I felt the story simply wasn't there. It didn't hold my interest. I forced myself to finish it, but I felt it was far too drawn out and often parts of it rambled. I would try this author again before giving up on her totally. I hope to have better luck next time.

Family saga covering France, Ireland and England,

This is nice family saga although not the best I have read as the characters seemed quite black/white. I enjoyed the way it spans several countries and two wars and you get a nice insight into what the war was like for civilians and the British Army in France at the beginning of WWI. However, at the end, the book wants to tie up the loose ends of several books and as someone who has not read the previous books in the series, I felt a bit lost.
