4.0 out of 5 stars Nice bedtime reading - Perfect for a 6 year old., Nov 18 2011

This review is from: The Children of Noisy Village (Paperback)
I recently read The Children of Noisy Village with my 6 year old son for bedtime reading. He really enjoyed it, especially the funny parts. Each chapter tells of some adventure Lisa and the other children have in their small Swedish village, or recounts their holiday celebrations.

It is light reading--I wouldn't say it's educational in any way, nor would it make the child think. This is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. It's harmless, cute, humorous bedtime reading, the perfect level for a 6 year old. It just isn't what I would call "literature," or a "living book."

We are on our third reading of this book. It is a nice book in that we can read a chapter one night and then come back to it a week or two later for another new story. We have so many books but my son always comes back to this one. We really love the tomten too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great story lost in translation, Oct 31 2010
This review is from: The Children of Noisy Village (Paperback)
I grew up reading these books in original, they were a family favourite. However, I find that this translation is very poor, and it has stripped these fantastic stories from the wit and humour Astrid Lindgren put in them. It's still OK and my daughter thinks they are funny, but as I browse through my originals I can see how the English version lacks timing and climax... I guess if you have never experienced the real thing you'd never know and probably still like the cute stories, even without laughing your head off while reading them.
