Fans of film adaptations of Truman Capote's original fiction will delight in the familiar terrain of Southern nostalgia and wide-eyed yearning that defines Children on Their Birthdays. Based on a Capote story, this 2002 feature stars Joe Pichler as Billy Bob, a boy whose post-World War II horizons broaden considerably with the arrival of Lilly Jane (Tania Raymonde), a glistening idealist and would-be Hollywood starlet, in his Medda, Alabama, neighborhood. So exotic, erudite, and almost recklessly expansive is Lilly Jane that she lights a fire of progressive thought (or perhaps truer courtesy) in the habitually racist community, inspiring Billy Bob to outgrow his narrow boyhood. Typical of Capote, there is something of the Dying Swan about Lilly Jane, but her Mystery is genuine and affecting. Playwright Mark Medoff directs with conviction but little skill; the film is saved by pure heart and a solid cast, including Sheryl Lee and Christopher McDonald. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the Best Movies i Have Seen Dec 21 2005
By Voom
Format:VHS Tape
We loved this movie, I love the charater Miss Bobbit, and i love the way she speaks. This movie was written for the period 1940's or 1950' One of the biggest movies was" Gone With Wind" and i almost sure that where the Miss Bobbit's accent come from. Which inspired my daughter who is 11 to dress up like her for her birthday in Novemeber 2005.

It very clear that this movie was done up in the 1940' or 1950's. The charaters in the movie were fantastic each played there roles with excellences.

I know children that today have manners, strength and kindness, who really respect this movies. Not every pre-teen is "rude and crude". some children actually act like ladies and gentleman with futures.

I wish there was sequel to this movie, and if they have this movie in a spanish version. I am sure this movie would do well in latim american, africa, israel, middle-east and Bahamas. This is well written movie for todays youth.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this film! Mar 30 2005

Format:VHS Tape
I just watched this film and I loved it! The character of Lily was a bit annoying-you had to wonder just how old this girl was. She was obviously a young girl but acted too bossy and adult-like. The accent was a bit irritating as well, but I found Tania Raymonde to be a very fascinating actress. The film was interesting, although the ending didn't turn out the way I thought it would. Lily and her mother were very ethnic looking and just turned up in this small town very mysteriously. Then there was the way she was standing up for the african-americans in the film. I was convinced there was going to be a twist and we would find out that Lily was secretly of black heritage. As a person of color myself, I thought that would have been a more interesting ending than the one we saw, which I didn't really like all that much. But all-in-all I would definitely watch this film again.

1.0 out of 5 stars Shallow movie May 15 2004
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This movie was shallow and cotton-candy like. I agree with the reviewer who said that he has a "fantasty that every copy of this movie will magically disappear." Many other films are more worthwhile to see than this film, which was focused on an extremely pompous and obnoxiously showy teenage girl.
This nuisance(actress Tania Raymonde) did a lousy job in this movie, she did such a terrible job faking a southern accent. The movie was overall corny but she was even worse. She tried to cover up her lack of acting talent in this movie with pretentiousness and a pompous display. This girl is very pretentious and shallow and conceited! I think all she wants to do on-screen is show-off. Save room on TV and film for real, genuine people talented in acting please!(She is certainly not real and genuine. And she lacks talent in acting.)

3.0 out of 5 stars This was a good movie
However, I felt that the role of "Lily Jane Bobbit" was miscast. The actress who played her, Tania Raymonde, seems to be much more suitable to play the role of a tomboy instead. Read more
