Product Description

This timeless tale is as wondrous as the story's snow globe, delivering with pristine gentleness a glimpse of a child's Welsh Christmas told from the remembrances of a kindly grandfather to his attentive grandson. Dylan Thomas' 1955 poem of the same name--originally written for radio--is richly adapted to the small screen by director Don McBrearty who brings to life an already masterful piece of prose, infusing it with even more grandeur through vivid costumes, scripting, and cinematography. Denholm Elliott is captivating, both as narrator and as Old Geraint, the grandpa who settles in on a rainy Christmas Eve to share with young Thomas (Mathonwy Reeves) his memories of Christmas past. Who can forget the fire in Mrs. Prothero's parlor; the unending snow, "a dumb, numb thunderstorm of white"; the Useless Presents, including the mewing moo; the Uncles "trying their new cigars"; and, always, the Aunties-- including Hannah, who customarily "laced her tea with rum." Gift-wrapped in delicate music by Lou Natale, the language, imagery, and subtle humor of this film--absent of stain and cynicism--makes for a suitably classic "annual family tradition." This video version of "A Child's Christmas in Whales" By Dylan Thomas is a classic treasure. It used to be on the PBS channels in the 80's and we made a primitive tape of it and watched it every Chirstmas for years but somehow that was lost. My children are now in their late 30's but they still enjoy seeing this beautiful and artistic version of the classic poem.
You will not find it in any store and even Amazon only had a few copies so I purchased 2. I can't believe it is not still shown every Christmas on the PBS channels. It is so much better than any other of the schlock you see.

"A Child's Christmas in Wales" features much of Dylan Thomas' original story read by the late Denholm Elliot and was partly filmed on location in Wales. Those familar with the story will notice that the film makers do shift some of the prose about to better suit the film version but this does nothing to diminish the enjoyment of a touching and gently humorous Christmas classic. This has long been my favorite Christmas video and I'm glad to see it is finally getting a release on DVD.

Finally, after waiting for years and watching it on PBS, "A Child's Christmas in Wales" is released on DVD. This quiet little gem is probably the most beautiful Christmas story ever produced, bar none. If you are a fan of the English Language spoken as it was intended, and of a quieter, more gentle time in history, you will love this Dylan Thomas based story as seen through the eyes of a grandfather and his grandson. Set in contemporary Wales on Christmas Eve, the grandfather recounts his memories of Christmas when he was a boy to his young grandson with the story shifting seamlessly back and forth between the historical and the present. The characters are wonderfully portrayed, and supported by beautiful costumes and Welsh small town scenes, while the narration paints vignettes that range from the comic to the poignant. This hour-long gem should be viewed in front of a blazing fireplace with an eggnog in one hand and with one's children and grandchildren gathered around. It is a priceless reminder of a time when people really knew what Christmas is all about.

I taped this in 1988 when it first appeared on Canadian TV. We have watched it every Christmas since. I have loaned it to other people who didn't appreciate the gentle lyrical prose, but my two now teenage sons couldn't imagine a Christmas without it. Can't wait to see it on DVD. "Mr. Daniel looks like a spaniel!"

I agree totally with Linda's earlier review. We did the same thing but lost our primitive taped version when we travelled to BC for a family christmas. This film should be shown on PBS or CBC every year. It is as traditional in our home as Handel's Messiah.

This is an excellent Christmas story, and it's about time that it was released on DVD! The story works well and is a good blend of the present-day grandfather recalling Christmas memories to his grandson with the visualizations of the memories themselves (which are in the majority). This allows the viewer to compare the rather subdued presentation by the present-day grandfather with the enthusiasm of him as a younger boy, and there's an extra dimension in that. Great casting and sets/costumes.

I've managed to catch this movie only a couple of times on TV in the last few years. Some years it's not shown at all, and it's very disappointing. When I saw it on Amazon I knew I had to own it! It's such a wonderful movie. Funny, sweet and nostalgic (even though it's set WAY before my time!).

This magical, wonderful fifty-five minute video is bound to become a Christmas tradition in your house. Follow a young Welsh boy through his yuletide tales of candy cigarettes, scratchy wool jumpers, clockwork mice and dancing by the seashore on Christmas day.
