For children, playing is learning, and this appealing book is filled with more than 60 Montessori-inspired play-and-learn ideas that parents and kids can enjoy together. The games are arranged progressively, starting with simple games for infants and advancing to games and activities suitable for active toddlers. Each game description includes instructions for play, items and materials needed, and suggested related play activities for parents and their toddlers. The games and activities described include--

  • Variations on hide and seek
  • Mirror fun
  • Guessing various sounds
  • Touch and texture games
  • Aiming a ball at a target
  • Dancing to music
  • Role-playing games
  • Developing language skill through stories
  • The alphabet game
  • Outdoor activities, including nature walks. . . and more. Parents are also encouraged to make up new games on their own with their children, always being clear in their own minds about the aim of each activity. The Montessori approach to learning emphasizes the idea that game-playing details need not always go according to original plan, but might lead children along new, unexpected paths of discovery. Features include color illustrations on most pages, and timelines to guide parents through typical children's learning stages.

3.0 out of 5 stars Title is Misleading-Very Little for Babies under 2.. Sep 28 2009

As a Montessori-trained preschool teacher, I was very excited about getting ideas from this book to use at home with my one year old. When it arrived, I was very disappointed in the utter lack of suggestions for children under 2. The great majority of ideas in this book are for older 2 and 3 year olds. What's worse is the handful of ideas for younger babies couldn't be more basic: rolling a ball, playing peekaboo, looking in a mirror, singing "If you're happy and you know it". Now I know encouraging play for young babies should be simple and developmentally appropriate, but come on! I suggestHow To Raise An Amazing Child the Montessori Way for a great, easy to read introduction to Montessori in the home and Games to Play with Toddlers, Revised (Games to Play Series)for much better Montessori-inspired activities for your 12-24 month old. Silberg's book in particular has great ideas for making independent activities for your child out of inexpensive, household materials.

    2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time Mar 18 2011

The title of the book was a little misleading. I though it would be a little more in depth Montessori based activities. Most likely anyone looking to purchase this book has the common knowledge to come up with the same activities presented in this book on their own. It promotes spending time together with your child, but most likely, anyone looking into buying this book already does that and is just looking for new ideas. I find YouTube to be more "inspirational" on finding ideas to teach and play at the same time for your young children.

3.0 out of 5 stars Again, not much for babies...Nothing for the under 1 crowd Aug 27 2012

Although all activities are very instinctive and you're likely already doing a lot of them, it's nice to have an easy reference to development appropriate activities for art, nature, physical activity, etc.
