The films of Joe d'Amato aka Aristide Massaccesi fluctuate from excellent to mediocre like a game of ping pong. As a cinematographer for almost every genre in Italian cinema in the sixties and seventies, he turned to directing some notable soft core excursions mixing those same genres. His films with the beautiful Laura Gemser as Black Emmanuelle and horror excursions with actor George Eastman aka Luigi Montifiori are proof of that. Later in his career he pursued hard core porn of which this film 'CHINESE KAMASUTRA' fits in between soft and hard core. Our main character played by Jacqueline Bisset lookalike Georgia Emerald is a librarian who becomes embroiled in an erotic nightmare involving a KamaSutra cult whose leader feels she is the reincarnation of his princess from a previous life. It sounds better on paper for the viewer is subjected to slow soft core sex scenes that should be erotic but left this viewer cold. The actors in some scenes seem to be annoyed going through the motions and the dubbing is particularly atrocious. The films credits seem to have Chinese pseudonyms for the technicians including D'Amato. This release is from One 7 Movies, a company which seems to be a spin off of the excellent defunct No Shame Films and Mya Communication. The quality is pretty good and from their future releases , it seems we will be getting more of Joe D'Amato's films and also other Italian exploitation titles. However ,this film is similar in plot and done much better by director Jesus Franco in his film 'MANSION OF THE LIVING DEAD' available by Severin Films which makes this release essential for Italian genre completists only.
