Product Description

Chip carving—a style of woodcarving in which knives are used to remove selected "chips" of wood from the project in a single piece—is introduced in this guide. Noted chip carver and teacher Dennis Moor presents the tools and techniques needed to replicate this ancient woodcarving art with detailed guidance on wood, tools, and sharpening, and tips on how to hold chip carving knives. Instructions on the three main types of chip carving, layout and design, and on getting the pattern onto the wood, lettering, and finishing are included. Woodworkers are taken through seven projects, including a napkin holder, a plant box, a letter holder, a trinket box, a tissue box holder, and a cheese and cracker tray. A photo gallery of finished pieces provides inspiration for novice woodworkers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fulfilled Expectations, Aug 30 2010
This review is from: Chip Carver's Workbook: Teach Yourself with 7 Easy and Decorative Projects (Paperback)
What a great book! I'm just starting out as a chippy and was delighted to get the book Chip Carver's Workbook so I could learn the right way to chip carve and the reasons why. Dennis Moor's book is easy to follow with detailed understandable text descriptions and great pictured and graphics. It is a book that the beginner can learn from as well as keep as a great future reference book as you become a more proficient carver. The seven easy Projects detailed in the book are an added bonus, I would recommend this book for all chip carvers especially those just starting out, it's best to learn the basics from a master.

This is the textbook I used to teach myself chip carving. There are plenty of good color pictures that shows basic techniques, help you visualize your hand positions, and how to diagnose your mistakes. If you follow the exercises step by step, you can learn the basics pretty quickly with good foundation. There are a few projects and patterns you can follow which are fun to do for practical objects. I highly recommend this book to anybody who is new to this art.

My first book on chip carving and it is one that I would highly recommend for anyone attempting chip carving or for learning how to use knives in other carving projects.
