Heartwarming Christmas in Cape Breton,
By Sheila "mom to 3" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Christmas Album (Audio CD)
This is the favourite Christmas CD at our house for the past 3 seasons (out of a stack of 40 or so - classical, jazz, folk etc.)Our 4 year old daughter requests this one almost daily! The beautiful melodies, some familiar and some not so well known, are delicately interpreted by the MacNeil family, with especially lovely singing by Lucy MacNeil, sometimes joined by her brothers. Fiddle, guitar, boran drum, harp, accordion, flutes keyboards and other accoustic instruments are well arranged, and recorded to a very high standard. Favourite tracks include the sentimental no 2. Children's Winter: "Snow man, snow house, hey play with me, shake the snow down from the tree, games once played by you and me, snow is softly falling." Also no. 14 Auld Lang Syne sung to a lovely old Scots tune, possibly the original melody for Robbie Burns' poetry, which makes you pause and appreciate the words more. For dancers, the rowdy no. 6, Christmas comes but once a year, and no. 7 Christmas in Killarney, are great fun. And there are two instrumental tracks, "the Snowplow Set" and "Party in Washabuckt" which capture the spirit of a Christmas ceilidh in Nova Scotia. The next best thing to being there!

Christmas With A Celtic Touch - East Coast Canadian Style,
By AvidOldiesCollector - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Christmas Album (Audio CD)
This multi-award-winning Canadian family group, which hails from Sydney Mines in the Cape Breton region of Nova Scotia, has been performing since 1980. Siblings Sheumas (backing vocals, acoustic piano, keyboards), Kyle (lead and backing vocals, fiddle, viola, mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar), Stewart (lead and backing vocals, accordion, Irish flute, whistles, electric and acoustic guitar, percussion), Lucy MacNeil (lead and backing vocals, fiddle, bohran, stepdance, Celtic harp) and Boyd (octave mandolin), all classically trained at Mount Allison University in Nova Scotia, kicked things off (Lucy was just 10 at the time), and this is the group heard in this 1999 release. Later they would be joined by brother Ryan.Other involved in this album are Jamie Gatti on electric and upright bass and Mathew Foulds on drums and percussion. Their unique name is taken from the name of a Scottish island, which just happens to be the ancestral home of Clan MacNeil. The tracks are a mix of the familiar and some you probably will be hearing for the first time, all beautifully done. Two involve medleys, with Snowplow Set including Back Of The Change House, Michael A. MacLean, Snowplow Reel, Johnny & Angie MacDonald and Honey Tweed, while Party In Washabuckt (a town in Cape Breton) includes Kantara to El Arish, Hock Hey Johnny Lad, Doug MacPhee's Strathspey, Hamish The Carpenter and Margaree Reel. The sound quality is excellent and in the insert are brief comments on each track accompanied by some old family photos taken around Christmas.

This is one of my favorite Christmas CD's. Melodies and harmonies are just beautiful! This is not typical USA Christmas music, so some tunes were familiar; others were not - but all were wonderful!!! Love hearing the combination of of instruments such as fiddle, guitar, boran drum, harp, accordion and others. My favorite tracks are *Children's Winter - so light and melodic. *Auld Lang Syne - which has a slow pace to it where you listen to every word and reflect on its meaning. *Christmas in Killarney - a fun, upbeat song which has you tapping your feet and singing along. Very high quality recordings - simply beautiful which fits the Christmas season! Enjoy - you will not be disappointed. |
