Product Description

Betty Kowalski isn't looking forward to the holidays. She just can't seem to find Christmas in her heart. There's church, of course. But who can she bake for these days? And who would care whether or not she pulled out the Christmas decorations? Her new neighbor just adds to the problem. He's doing home improvements that don't appear to be improving much of anything. These days when Betty looks out the window, she sees a beat-up truck, a pile of junk, lots of blue tarps, and--horror of horrors--an old pink toilet. But when a mangy dog appears at her doorstep, the stage is set for Betty to learn a very important lesson about what Christmas is all about. This contemporary Christmas story is a timely yet gentle reminder that God can work miracles through something as seemingly insignificant as a little brown dog.

From the Inside Flap

A little before seven on Monday morning, Betty woke to the sound of someone trying to break into her house. At least that was what it sounded like to her. . . . It was that scruffy dog again. Jack Jones's mongrel. The dog crouched down, whimpering, and despite Betty's bitter feelings toward her neighbor, she felt a tinge of pity for the poor, dirty animal. And Betty didn't even like dogs. "Go home, you foolish thing," she said. "Go bother your owner." The dog just whined. Betty knelt down with the screen still between her and the dog. "Go home," she said again. "Shoo!" But the dog didn't budge. And now Betty didn't know what to do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute Story, Happy Ending, Dec 6 2009
By J. VanderPloeg "Mommy Bookworm" (Ontario, Canada) - See all my reviews

The adorable pup on the cover beckoned me. This is a lighthearted story of an older woman who is not at all in the Christmas spirit, especially when it comes to her neighbor Jack. Through a series of events, she finds herself not just one but three unexpected visitors for Christmas and learns what Christmas is really all about. It is a cute story with a happy ending; just right to get you in the right spirit for Christmas! The plot is quite simple, as are the which makes it easy to read in the spare moments throughout the day. In hind sight, it would have made a nice story to read in the evenings as a family. I finished it quite quickly. When I finished, I knew I would pass this book on to my grandmother who is in the hospital. I am sure she will enjoy it as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars a charming story, Dec 4 2009
By susanne phaneuf "misunderstood" (toronto) - See all my reviews

i will admit, i am a sucker for a good Christmas story, and during this season when there is so much demanding time, energy and focus, who couldn't use a good, holiday spirit invoking story to help relax?

betty kowalski's life has turned into a boring, predictable routine. the only 'excitement' she has are the frustratingly unpleasant run-ins with her equally unpleasant neighbor, with whom she fears the worst. with a goal to survive the holidays alone, then decide what to do afterward, she is a woman without a lot of hope.

but for a woman who isn't expecting much, there seems to always be someone at her door. first a dog, then others, each lost and alone in their own way, and all looking for something that eludes them.

The Christmas Dog is a charming Christmas story that i read in one afternoon. and at the risk of sounding sappy, i will say that it is a story that reminds us that when we open our hearts to love, even if it is just a dog, you never know what will happen.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun read!, Dec 2 2009
By Shirley Rempel (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews

I have heard so many good things about Melody Carlson's book, but honestly had never read any of them, until I read The Christmas Dog. I will definitely be reading more of her books.

The Christmas dog has two main stories going on....Betty's grand-daughter runs away from home and shows up at her house, all the while Betty is dealing with an unruly neighbor. The way that Carlson interconnects these stories is wonderful. Her book is a wonderful reminder of the importance of relationships in our lives. No matter how difficult those relationships can be, we will always learn something from them. The book also reminds the reader the importance of "loving your neighbor" despite faults, because love will come when we least expect it.
