A sweet and enjoyable Christmas album,
By
This review is from: Christmas in Harmony (Audio CD)
Although this is the first official Christmas album from Wilson Phillips, these ladies have been at it before. They recorded a nice version of "Silent Night" for the second edition of the "Very Special Christmas" series, Wendy and Carnie Wilson released a splendid Christmas album (1993's « Hey Santa! ») and Carnie Wilson has had her own solo Christmas album a few years ago. "Christmas In Harmony" is not only a fine reminder of how great their vocal harmonies are, but also an enjoyable and generally upbeat affair that will sound good on any type of Christmas party. There are many highlights here: "Winter Wonderland" features some surprising and exciting vocal modulations, "The Christmas Song" is the album's most heartfelt moment, "Silver Bells" and "Sleigh Ride" are impeccable, "Christmastime" is quite catchy and "Our Prayer" provides a breath-taking a capella conclusion to the album. This is not a perfect album, however, if only for the song selection. While it's nice to hear some original Christmas songs, half of the songs on "Christmas In Harmony" are either new or obscure. Some of them are actually quite good ("Christmastime", "Warm Lovin' Christmastime" ), but they sound rather formulaic. It could also be argued that too many songs follow the same rhythmic pattern and feature similar arrangements ("Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Winter Wonderland", "Warm Lovin' Christmastime" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" are virtually interchangeable). Still, it's no reason to snob this sweet and enjoyable Christmas album. Longtime fans of Wilson Phillips will certainly want to own this fine collection of seasonal songs, but the more casual fans might find "Hey Santa!" to be a superior recording.

One of the greatest gifts this Christmas season comes from the immensely talented vocal group, Wilson Phillips. With their latest release, "Christmas In Harmony", the listener is treated to 13 arrangements of holiday songs--both old & new--all lavished with WP's signature lush harmonies & produced by Glen Ballard, the same talent who perfected their sound in the early 90's.The CD opens with, "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday". Although lyrically a bit inane, Wilson Phillips breathe new life into this relic from the early 70's turning it into a fun, catchy pop tune. They cover standards such as "Little Drummer Boy", "The Christmas Song" & Silver Bells" making each one uniquely their own with their extraordinary vocal styling. And favorites such as "Sleigh Ride" & "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" possess an enjoyable girl-group vibe reminiscent of the 60's. The CD's true highlights are the 3 new WP offerings. "Warm Lovin' Christmastime", written by Carnie's husband, Rob Bonfiglio, is a wonderful, up tempo tune that shines as it celebrates being with the one you love at Christmas. Then there's "Christmastime" created by Chynna & producer Glen Ballard. It's a bright, effervescent number that evokes a feeling of pure bliss. Lastly, "Joy" is a gorgeous song that captivates with WP's shimmering vocals. The CD closes with a number written & arranged by Brian Wilson. "Our Prayer" is a stunning, wordless a capella piece that showcases the amazing vocal prowess of Wilson Phillips. With both festive & beautiful song selections, brilliant production & stunning vocals, "Christmas In Harmony" captures the essence of the love & joy at the holiday season!! 16 of 20 people found the following review helpful

fun Christmas album,

Wilson Phillips have reunited yet again. This time they have recorded a Christmas album. I enjoyed it much more than their previous comeback effort. The album contains some fun, new Christmas tunes paired up with some Christmas classics. In a way, the album reminds me of a modern update to the 1960s Phil Spector girl group Christmas sounds. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful

Songs and harmonies are nice, but . . .,

I loved WP when they first burst onto the music scene in the early 90s. So I went and got this CD. The vocals and harmonies are okay, but it's nothing to get all excited about. It was a little disappointing. Silent Night on this CD sounds more restained and not as powerful as when they recorded it for A Very Special Christmas 2 in 1992. Maybe that was done on purpose. The new songs are nice sounding, but I don't think they'll become holiday standards we hear every year on the radio. The last song, Our Prayer, consists of the trio harmonizing together for less than 90 seconds. That's it. No words, just aahhhs. Very strange. I was waiting for a few vocals. The girls still sound good, but I was expecting more from this CD. |
