As the song goes, "Merry Christmas" has already "been said many times, many ways." Diana Krall's Christmas Songs is a worthy--though not particularly unique--addition to the holiday catalog. On it, she excels with an approach mastered long ago: elegant delivery that gives extra polish to a very familiar lineup. Some might find her style frosty at times, but that will come as a relief to those who want their carolers to cut through some of the holiday treacle and create a festive, yet grown-up vibe. And Krall does show off her playful side with little, personal touches. In "Winter Wonderland" she promises to "frolic and play the Canadian way," which should draw smiles from her native land. (That'll mean toasting the holiday with Molson, eh?) Elsewhere, she ends "Jingle Bells" with the girlishly giddy statement, "I'm just crazy about horses." Well…can't argue with that. --Leah Weathersby

First of all, let me say I have nearly all of Diana Krall's albums and really enjoy her singing, piano and original compositions as well as how she handles standards.
Naturally I figured I couldn't miss with this one. I'm sad to say that I was wrong. It may be my own personal bias as I don't mind Christmas songs done a BIT jazzy but I like them to still be at least somewhat reminiscent of the original version. Some of the songs on this CD would qualify but a lot of them are way too rolicking and overdone for my taste. Ms. Krall does a lot of semi-skat doo-wap type singing on some of the selections that sounds affected to me. She wrings "White Christmas" out until it's like a hackneyed Las Vegas version with none of the wistfulness of the words left.
I suppose it's too much to hope for but I would love to hear her do another Christmas CD sometime and this time, handle it with a little more of her usual subtlety.

This is a fabulous album, showcasing her vocal and piano-playing talents, as well as her abilities to interpret familiar songs with just enough swing to make them different while still retaining the familiarity.
Note that the album includes the 3 tracks previously released on the mini-album (Jingle Bells, Have Yourself, and a just about perfect rendition of Christmas Time Is Here), plus an addition 9 tracks. A lot of the numbers include a full jazz orchestra, but a couple are just her or with her trio.
If you like Diana Krall you will not be disappointed with this album. It will make a very nice to your collection to add variety to the traditional and pop arrangements.

Diana Krall has come up with a perfect Christmas album. The selection of material is flawless and loaded with classics - which, let's face it, is a key element in a Christmas record. Most of the songs on the album were recorded with a big band, which brings out the best in Krall; the result is slick, flawless and will perfectly suit your holiday season. When she turns down the tempo for piano-and-vocals ballads, it's intimate enough to make you feel as though she's sitting in the room with you. The highlights are "Jingle bells", "Winter wonderland", "What are you doing New Year's eve", "Christmas time is here", "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" and "I'll be home for Christmas"; however, every track is a keeper. It's all a grown-up affair, of course, and it's hardly a trendy record; but anyone even remotely interested with Krall's instantly recognizable jazzy sounds will find great rewards in this excellent Christmas album.
