I think for people from the UK (like my good self), Christmas albums by accomplished
Singer/songwriters seem a little baffling, regurgitating well worn songs you've heard a million times before.
So it was kind of inevitable that Dylan (being the subversive soul that he is) would record his interpretation of this musical tradition.
Bob must have been a fan of the 1940's-50's style of Xmas music, as most the album has been recorded in that style, quite syrupy with male & female backing singers (which does magnify Dylan's short cummings as singer).
The most successful tracks on the album ("The Christmas Blues" & "Silver Bells") are the ones that have been stripped down with Dylan performing solo, but the absolute highlight is the Pogue's inspired "Must be Santa", a bona-fide Yule-tied classic.
Very much a tongue in cheek, almost anti-Christmas (kind of a punk mentality) album & quite fun to play on Xmas day to folk who have know Idea who his nibs is!

I would buy most of Bob Dylan works. I have listened twice to the Christmas album. I like that it is for a cause and I enjoyed his rendition of some traditional music. Easily recognizable as Dylan. He continues to surprise. Modern Times is one of my favourite albums ever of any musician.

This is a really good cd by Bob Dylan! I love Christmas music even though its a little early for it. I think Bob had fun making this cd! It sounds kind of old fashioned and Ilike that bout it. I especially like the song here somes Santa Claus, and must be Santa, but my favorite is Little Drummer Boy I think he does an excellent job on that song! If you like Bob Dylan you should buy this album it is excellent and even better than I thought it would be!! Thank you Bob for making this album, and having proceeds go to feeding the hungry in the up coming Christmas season. Knowing that this album was made for that reason should make many people decide to buy it. Also when you listen to this album remember Bob Dylan's voice does not sound like it did when he was younger!! I personally still like his voice very much, and I am grateful that at 68 Bob Dylan is still making excellent music for his Fans! Thanks again Bob for the Christmas album, I know I will probably wear out this cd

"Christmas in the Heart" by Bob Dylan is a must have for any Dylan fan! Dylan's genius hasn't declined at all especially in the past 10 years or so, and should anybody need proof, then here it is. It's always a risky move for any big time artist to make a Christmas album. His/Her album may not sound so artistically interesting. The risks are many in that respect but the financial returns are huge and so many pop/rock artists usually do a Christmas album that is a three star at best.

No. 1, this album is a non-profit project inspired by Bob Dylan and could potentially help make millions of people in our society a little less hungry this year. So, you really can't go wrong there. And of course it makes perfect sense too. A Christmas album for charity!
2, Like almost all of Dylans albums, you have to listen to it at least 2-3 times to really begin to 'hear' what's going on and then you say to yourself, "Wow, this dude is right on. I dig this sound and it's so original"

Well, that's what you'll be saying to yourself after listening to this album. And that's what makes Dylan so special. He's constantly reinventing his own musical sound and image and his albums always have something in them to inspire. All of these songs are very happy and cheerful. A very different approach from what most Dylan fans are used to hearing from him. Also, the entire album was produced by Bob Dylan who has been producing his own albums with great success now for quite a few years.
Produced by Bob Dylan-AKA-Jack Frost

It's an entertaining album and a pure original that leans on a very clean 1940's-50's type of sound that Dylan has been into for quite awhile now.

In a 2004 interview with "60 Minutes" Dylan openly admitted that every once in a while he will intentionally make a bad album. I strongly suspect that "Christmas in the Heart" is one. This CD has got to be satire . . . some kind of bizarre put-on.

If you want a Christmas album sung with heart and sincerity I suggest Christmas by Alabama.
