After listening to this performance, you will surely feel that you had never experienced an Orpheus like this one. It is as if the Gluck-Calzabigi opus had acquired a new meaning upon you. Rene Jacobs, now a successful conductor and baroque specialist, is a most communicative and precise Orpheus (although Ragin for Gardiner is more emotional). The libretto is gorgeous, with facsimile prints of the texts. And the Kuijken are again succesful in their "original" approach. I like Gardiner's but this is my first choice overall for Gluck's most popular opera. Now I wish I can see David Daniels in the main role next season.
