Review

"With the Black Company series Glen Cook single-handedly changed the face of fantasy--something a lot of people didn't notice and maybe still don't. He brought the story down to a human level, dispensing with the cliché archetypes of princes, kings, and evil sorcerers. Reading his stuff was like reading Vietnam War fiction on peyote." --Steven Erikson, author of Gardens of the Moon

Product Description

Darkness wars with darkness as the hard-bitten men of the Black Company take their pay and do what they must. They bury their doubts with their dead.

Then comes the prophecy: The White Rose has been reborn, somewhere, to embody good once more….

This omnibus edition comprises The Black Company, Shadows Linger, and The White Rose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series, Oct 14 2011
This review is from: Chronicles of the Black Company (Paperback)
I picked up this book, which combines the first three books of the Black Company series, while I wait for the final book of the Wheel of Time Series to be released. I always figured I would have a hard time finding a series that gripped me as much as the Wheel of Time Series did. I was wrong. The Black Company is written vastly different, I still have no idea what the main character looks like to be honest, but it is as gripping and intense as the Wheel of Time series if not more so! I have troubles setting down this book and would recommend it to any honest fantasy fan or even someone who simply appreciates a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, Aug 29 2011

This is one of my favourite books because not only are the characters realistic people but Mr Cook writes as if he assumes intelligence in the reader. The author does not spoon feed the reader, you have to "keep up" with him. If you enjoy a great fantasy story that keeps a great pace, this book is for you. I have only newly discovered Glen Cook, you can be sure that I will be reading eveything he has written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, April 15 2009

I found this book recommended in one of the lists on Amazon. I've been reading fantasy novels all of my life, but I'd never heard of Glen Cook. I can honestly say this is one of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. Unlike most, its written from a first-person perspective. It took a little getting used to, but it really helped me to connect with the characters. And they aren't your usual bunch of heroes - this is a bunch of professional soldiers who have allot of flaws and don't always do the right thing. I had a tough time putting this book down. I highly recommend it.
