4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best March 10 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Chronicles of the Kencyrath is a compilation of PC Hodgell's books about Jame of the Kencyrath up to the beginning of Seeker's Mask. Because the books in this series were written many years apart and published in different formats by different (smaller) publishers, it is difficult to track down whether all information in her earlier works is included in Chronicles - but either way it is a compelling, well written read. PC Hodgell has a skill in presenting a world and its contradictions, confusions and characters that is rarely found. Her writing is best described as compelling and her work is very difficult to put down. In fact you'll want to read it again and again and each time, you will find a new nuance to ponder. Very thought provoking stuff. Seeker's Mask continues on the tradition, though perhaps because of the intervening years between writings, it has a slightly different feel. Both books leave you wishing that you could get hold of the next book urgently. I did read that the final(?) book in the series would be published in 2004. Can't wait! PC Hodgell - hurry! PS WHY aren't these books more widely known? WHAT are the major publishing houses doing, ignoring this author - or is it PC Hodgell choosing artistic integrity over commerciality?

3.0 out of 5 stars books are fine but edition is old and has been superseded Oct. 4 2012

I truly enjoy this series and am happy they have found a new publisher and more books are being issued. The rating above is solely for this particular edition.

The other review was written in 2004 and no doubt was accurate at the time - this is 2012 and things have changed

Specifically, this edition is a compilation of God Stalk and Dark of the Moon - the first two books. It does not have any of the short stories that have appeared in a few places over the years, which was my hope.

You can see for yourself what the publication date is 1987, so most copies will show their age.
It is a 600 page trade paperback, so it is unwieldy and if it has been read there will be signs of it. Currently there are other choices if you want the first two books either in hardback or trade paperback

I've been following this series since the early 1980s, so I have several versions of the books that I have accumulated over the years. There is nothing wrong with this edition, or with the books, I just wanted to add a clear and complete description of what this one consists of.
