Book Description

Feb 1 2011
A contemporary fable about a magical remedy for a baby who won't stop crying. Miriam is a baker whose bread is full of smells to make your nose twitch and tastes to make your tongue tingle. Miriam's own favorite cinnamon bread so delights Sebastian, a musician who enters her shop, that he buys it every day for a year and then asks her to marry him. After a baby is born to the happy couple, all is blissful until their bundle of joy begins crying. And crying. Only when the two are almost at wit's end does Miriam suddenly know, looking down at her baby curled up like a little raisin, exactly what she must do. A celebration of the bond between mother and child and an ode to the power of our senses, each delectable word and image of this beautifully told and illustrated story will be savored.

Before long, the couple have a baby who seems perfect in every way until she starts crying from sun-up to sundown. The couple try to soothe the baby, but nothing works. 5.0 out of 5 stars such a sweet book Aug 20 2012
By ju-ju
I bought this book after hearing the author read from it at a book show in Toronto. The pictures are really quite lovely and the whimsical story is so sweet. The fact that the couple is bi-racial is never mentioned explicitly, and I love the fact that this brown man and white woman fall in love and have a cinnamon baby!

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing! Mar 8 2011
By Lisa Barker - Published on Amazon.com
Refreshing! Cinnamon baby is about the bond of motherhood, the powerful sense of smell and the love of a not-so-cookie-cutter family. Great storytelling and delightful illustrations make just the right combination for this modern fairytale. Miriam the baker and Sebastian marry and are soon blessed with a bawling babe. Children will easily relate to a new baby that does nothing but cry and all the steps parents take to comfort the baby. In the end Mom knows just the thing and they all live happily ever after, an ending that deliciously ties it all together. One last observation: the baby is referred to as "it" and it would have been nicer if "it" had been called a her or him - but that hardly disrupts this wonderful tale. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review

After having a perfect, easy going baby then a very colicky, unsettled baby- this book was heaven to my ears. It may sound silly- but it was so nice reading this to my little ones each night as they loved it (especially my 3 year old who was also having to adjust to a crying baby) because it made me feel like we weren't alone. Luckily baby got happy with some medical help, and this book will always have a special place in my heart. The illustrations are beautiful. So cozy.
3.0 out of 5 stars A Sweet Little Story Nov 23 2011
By Debnance at Readerbuzz - Published on Amazon.com
Miriam is a wonderful baker and her favorite bread to make is cinnamon bread. Sebastian comes every day to Miriam's bakery for a year and they marry. Soon they have a lovely child. The baby cried every day every hour and no one could figure out what to do to stop it from crying. Finally, Miriam took the baby to the bakery and made cinnamon bread and the baby stopped crying.

The whole book has a lovely brown color and almost seems to give off a cinnamon-y smell.

"Miriam loved to take the springy dough from the mixer and knead in all the tasty treasures with her warm, soft hands. Because it was her favorite, Miriam always saved the cinnamon bread for last. As she kneaded the raisins into the dough, she sang all the songs her mother had taught her when she was a child and the smell of cinnamon and the sound of her beautiful voice rose together and curled through the air."
