The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?

CITY OF LOST SOULS (Mortal Instruments #5 YA) by Cassandra Clare

CITY OF LOST SOULS is the latest release (May 2012) from Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series. In their continuing war against the demons and Jonathan Morgenstern, Clary and the Shadowhunters must now face a new enemy that was once a respected member of their own. With Jace missing and presumably under the control of Sebastian (aka Jonathan), Clary's decision to go against orders will once again risk the lives of everyone she knows and loves.

Several weeks after the disappearance of Jace and Sebastian, Clary is frustrated when the Clave no longer place priority on Jace's recovery. When the Clave clear Clary of any wrongdoing or involvement in the missing duo's whereabouts, Clary decides it is time to cash in on the Seelie Queen's promise. Knowing that this is probably one of the biggest mistakes of her life, Clary is once again thrown into a world of misconceptions and double talk. But it is a stunned Clary who will find both Jace and Sebastian trolling the halls of the Institute looking for a secret to uncover an ancient power.

Once again Luke and his pack of werewolves, as well as the Isabelle, Simon, Alex and Magnus will have their hands full protecting the Shadowhunters and the others from Sebastian's cruel and evil ideals. But when a severely injured Luke lay dying from his wounds, it is Clary who will make the decision, to disobey the orders in search of the young man she once knew. With the help of Magnus Bane, Clary is propelled into an ever-changing dimension on the other side of the world.

Alec's relationship with Magnus begins to unravel as his jealousy and mortality shriek their reality with every passing day.

This latest addition to the Mortal Instruments has the characters increasingly coming into their own power, maturity and dealing with the consequences of their actions. As all the previous books in this stream and the prequel, this is a richly written universe that keeps you hooked wanting more.

Despite this series being my most favourite series of ALL TIME I must admit that I was a bit hesitant to read this book. While I had initially liked its predecessor "City of Fallen Angels" (book four in the series) I came to realize through rereading it multiple times and thinking it over for weeks, if not months, that it was in fact not as good as I had originally thought (I originally rated it 10/10, if I were to go back I would now rate it 7/10 or 8/10)- there was a lot of things about it that irked me, for instance seemingly random plot points becoming MAJOR (I don't know about y'all, but I thought that the Lilith thing was kind of a stretch and yet *another* thing standing in Jace and Clary's way? UGH). However, I now realize that my fears for this book were entirely unfounded (or at least a *little* bit unfounded- there were admittedly still some problems with this book, but nowhere near as many as "CoFA").

One of my biggest problems with this book was Sebastian. For weeks after seeing the trailer for this book I was Tweeting, Facebooking, and telling anyone who came within a ten foot radius of me how KICK-BUTT Sebastian was going to be. I mean, how could he not with wings of fire and his declaration of "I am going to burn down the world"? But I am sad to say that he wasn't.That is not to say that he wasn't creepy or evil, because he was as creepy as hell, but more so creepy in a 'I-want-to-make-out-with-my-sister-despite-knowing-FOR-LEGIT-that-she-is-my-actual-sister' rather than 'He's-climbing-in-your-windows-He's-snatchin-your-people up-Hide-your-kids-hide-your wife-And-hide-your-husband' kind of creepy (a la Antoine Dodson).
