Product Description

On November 5th, 1688, Protestant Prince William of Orange answered the call of nobles and churchmen to come and "rescue the nation" from the Catholicism of King James II. Dutch warships sailed unchallenged into English waters. Despite misgivings about King James, Thomas de Chastelain stays true to his oath of loyalty to the monarchy -- thereby imperiling himself, his wife Libby and his children Piers and James. Defeated in battle, Thomas eventually has to flee with the rump of the royal party to Scotland, where he lives the life of an outcast. All the while, a noose is tightening around the family he has left behind in England. The temptation to compromise is great, as Thomas' father-in-law Lord St. Clare, who has effortlessly switched sides, never ceases to remind him. But Thomas is made of sterner stuff, and his fateful decision triggers a series of dramatic events.

5.0 out of 5 stars reader extraordinaire, May 22 2008

This review is from: Civil Blood (Paperback)
This book has to be one of my favorites ever. The attention to detail is remarkable and lets one feel as if they are right there in the story.I do not know a great deal about this time in history, but was given enough information that I could understand what was going on without any problem. It was fast-paced and I found that I couldn't put the book down.I was sorry it had to come to an end.Let's hope there is a follow-up soon !

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, readable, classy, Feb 6 2008

This review is from: Civil Blood (Paperback)
Having not previously read much historical fiction save for classics like War and Peace, I was initially concerned that I'd feel lost in this rather large book and be unable to follow the plot. Nothing could have been further from the truth. (Conversely, I'm also not interested in one of those bodice-rippers you feel embarrassed to be reading on public transit.)

I'm pleased to report that I found Civil Blood hard to put down. Its compelling, well-paced diction keeps you turning the pages into the wee hours when you suddenly realize you've polished off another 100 pages but you have to get up in three hours.

I prefer Civil Blood to other works of this genre because its human drama is so involving. The reader doesn't have to wallow through battle strategy, nor be a history buff to understand the story or appreciate its implications.

I get the impression there isn't a pretentious bone in M.Stephure's body, and that her sole motivation was to provide a beautifully crafted, articulate story wrought from a pivotal part of world history. Mission accomplished, with class.

Read it--you won't regret investing in this one.
