Review

Library Journal
"Welch, a reporter/editor for the British music paper Melody Maker during the 1960s and 1970s, delivers an oversized, lavishly illustrated biography of guitar icon Eric Clapton. He devotes much of the text to and shares the most insights on Clapton's career pre-1974: his humble beginnings and stints with John Mayall, the Yardbirds, Cream, and Blind Faith. Welch rushes through the remainder of the guitarist's more pop-oriented career up to the present. Throughout, he collects 400 color photos of posters, album covers, and concert scenes of Clapton and his bands. Verdict: A good companion to Clapton's best-selling 2007 autobiography (Clapton: The Autobiography), this book taps Welch's firsthand knowledge of his subject and adds new material via interviews with Clapton's early bandmates. Appealing for music fans, but not essential."

Internet Review of Books
"Chris Welch’s book does Clapton justice. The book includes 400 photographs and eleven chapters that follow Clapton from his youth through the present day, including his work with the groups Cream, Yardbirds, and Derek and the Dominoes. For those youngsters who only recognize Clapton from his bearded, eye-glass-wearing “Tears of Heaven” days, the pictures of young Eric will be evidence of his decades of influence."

“Sometimes you actually can tell a book by its cover, contrary to the old saying that says you can’t. Between the covers the book proves to be as classy and well done as its first impression” - GuitarInternational.com

Product Description

One of Guitar World magazine’s Top 15 rock books of 2011.

He was born Eric Patrick Clapton, but you can just call him “Slowhand.”

Over the years, fans of Eric Clapton have debated the high points of an epic career in blues and rock ‘n’ roll spanning nearly fifty years. Which song best epitomizes Clapton’s skills as a songwriter? Which era—the Yardbirds, Cream or his solo work—stands about above the rest? Where does Clapton rank on the list of all-time guitar greats?

Whatever your opinions may be, one this is for sure: few artists have contributed as much to the world of music as the six-string magician from Ripley.

Put simply, one look at Clapton’s five-decade-long résumé is enough to blow any rock ‘n’ roll junkie’s mind. It includes time with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, the Plastic Ono Band, Bonnie & Delaney, Derek and the Dominoes, and his own solo discography, not to mention his Crossroads festivals and appearances at the Concert for Bangladesh, the Last Waltz, Live Aid, the Secret Policeman’s Other Ball, and so much more.

Along the way, Clapton has won seven Grammy Awards and eighteen gold, eight platinum, and seven multi-platinum albums—including one ten-times platinum LP. And if that weren’t enough, he’s also the only musician to have been inducted in the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame three times—as a solo performer and as a member of the Yardbirds and Cream.

From respected author and rock journo Chris Welch, Clapton: The Ultimate Illustrated History is a beautifully illustrated celebration of all things Clapton. Packed with more than 400 photographs, guitars, concert posters, and other memorabilia, this first-of-its kind book also houses eleven chapters following Clapton’s remarkable career—from its earliest days to his various work in several now-legendary bands to his stunning solo career. Also included is a wealth of sidebars covering the gear Clapton has used through the years, as well as extensive appendices detailing his complete discography.

When i first opened the package and i saw the cover, i just said: "wow, this book is beautiful". the cover is so out of this world. so delicately done. you open the book and see a lot of pictures from shows, tickets, poster. Besides has a lot of history from Clapton, and quotes! it really shows you an intimate look on how backstage of Clapton were like!. Also you'll see pictures of shows, showing you a look of Clapton that you'll never imagine before!. Whoever is into Clapton, I sure recommend this book to!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, but problems with the facts and omissions., Jan 15 2012

I finally sat down last night to read the whole book.
When i first purchased this book back in September, I just read the post Cream to Dominos section. This book did a great job covering the part of Clapton's career that he just glossed over in his autobiography. It does cover the meltdown of Blind Faith and of Eric in general at this point in his life. How Stigwood just threw him out there while working with the Bee Gees. After I read that part I just left it on the coffee table next to my Ultimate Fender book, but I couldn't sleep last night and picked up the book again.

Yes there are some great photos and great stories in the book. That being said, there are some major errors in the book. It starts early with Mr. Welch stating Clapton's real last name is Clapp, after his grandparents. Another huge error was the age of Hendrix, given in the book as 25. Said 461 was the address of the studio not the house they stayed in. Also he claims that Blackie was made from six or seven guitars (while it was only three) and that Brownie, a stock strat, was also built in the same manner. These are just ones I can recall off the top of my head. These are just ones I can recall off the top of my head

Then there are the omissions. I had hoped there would have been more candid shots, since the author is someone who has been hanging with Clapton since the first Cream rehearsal. Instead we are given mostly stock Clapton photos. No Jimi and Eric. No SRV and Eric. Someone like this could have asked Eric for some photos for this book. He skipped over the birth of his first daughter in the 80's. He skipped all of the great photos from the sale of the guitars and other gear for Crossroads.

Over all it seems like the writer got the 1983 and said, "Ok I'm done here, are some pretty pretty pictures and liner notes from the records." The last chapter just felt rushed. How can you spend so much time on the first twenty years and then phone in the last twenty. Yes the photos are spectacular. In fact thanks to the fan club and the deluxe version Clapton, I have three of them hanging on my walls. Yes it makes a nice companion to Clapton: The Autobiography, but in the end I would have like to have seen more never before seen photos, more on the later years and better fact checking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clapton: The Ultimate Illustrated History, Nov 6 2011

A much detailed photographic history of one of the most influential guitarists of all time. Some photos have been seen but forgotten by time and others have not been seen at all (well maybe not in the US). Nicely covered from every facet of his career through Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith and his solo years. A peek at some of the guitars he has played and collected through the years. (Some as many know have been auctioned off for the Crossroads Center) Chris Welch has done an amazing job of putting all this together-concert photos, ticket stubs, program books, various pictures on and off stage and an informative narrative of his career, from beginning to now. Some of the pictures shown I was present at those concerts, so it brought back some nice memories and for those of you who do buy the book and you were there at those various concerts, it might do the same for you. A must have for any Clapton fan, and for others who are curious a very good book, despite some factual errors printed through the book.
