An easy-to-read informative book with maps and photos on almost every page. Although it is a little outdated now, published in 1995, I feel quite prepared to plan a hike in Kootenay National Park this summer. I especially appreciate the chapter on dealing with bears!

This is a very well laid out, well written book with lots of excellent photographs. A guide book is, by its very nature, a subjective work. However, I don't think there are many experienced Canadian Rockies hikers who would have an arguement with this author on what are considered "classic" hikes. The access/approach info and trail discriptions are as detailed as they need to be without giving away all the minutia and magic of individual hikes themselves. I personally prefer guide books that don't go overboard with their route descriptions. I consider this book a classic, and feel it belongs on any hiker's shelf. Even if you have no idea when or how you may make it out to the Canadian Rockies - get the book and dream!
