I'm not sure why they didn't release a career-spanning collection, but this one is pretty much just from the 80's. So nothing afterwards like the hit "Backwater", among others. But of course what's here is awesome, and it's remastered too. All the old stuff is sweet, so I won't pick those apart. The last 4 tracks are previously unreleased. The booklet also has a band history. So if you want a great intro to an influential band, get "Classic Puppets". It would go well with "Too High To Die".

I also like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" April 10 2005

This is a best of. I would call it a good introduction to the band. It has some good songs on it, mostly from "Up on the Sun" and "Meat Puppets II" but it also has a lot of other great stuff. I understand why songs that were not good enough to be on the original albums suddenly are classified to be on the "best of". I'm talking about songs like "On the Move", "Burn the Honky Tonk Down" and last last four songs - all fantastic. I also think that the mixture of punk, metal and country works well being on the same album together; Derrick Bostrom knew what he was doing when attempting to show the variety of the band's work. Songs like "Looking at the Rain" and "Get on Down" I find very cool and help to make this compilation a good listen. Blah blah *no 90s stuff* blah blah *personal preferences* blah blah. Buy it, it ain't too bad at all.

New Leaf Feb. 15 2006

Yep 5 stars. I know that you already have over 80% of this if you're a big MP fan. I know that it's more of a sampler than any real best of deal. But... it has "New Leaf". The last track on the album derives from the last incarnation of the band, the Royal Neanderthal Orchestra era... fortunately they were disuaded from using that awful band name. New Leaf is from the Golden Lies era (which was an amazing album, still is in fact) "New Leaf" is better even than any of the songs on that album, or at least as good as the best 1 or 2... better than most songs ever really. So for that, this lp gets 5 stars. It also has no tracks from Monsters, but 3 demos from Monsters, which shoulda been on the Monsters reissue, but instead they're here.... they're decent.
Classic Puppets this is. March 20 2013

Classic Puppets is a 2004 compilation CD by the Meat Puppets. With that said, the CD is a compilation of some of the Meat Puppets' greatest hits from the first part of making music. You wont see any songs past their first few albums, so you can't really consider this a greatest hits album but it does have some of their best songs. I guess you could call it a sampler of their music, not their best but not their worst either. I mainly got this album however, to complete my collection f meat puppets, as this album includes a few previously unreleased tracks. This tracks, to say the least, are pretty good and it's hard to fathom that these songs were not released on any of their albums along the lines. Overall, this is a solid little compilation album that would get only 3 stars if it weren't for the unreleased tracks (which did boost up my score.) Recommended if you have some money to spare although not mandatory for the casual meat puppets fan.

Listening to it right now-- five years after I originally purchased it. Great collection and a great band. Highly recommend.
