Product Description

Paul Anka follows up 2005's Rock Swings, his popular collection of covers done classic Vegas style, with another collection of unlikely pop and rock songs--also done classic Vegas style. One of the most familiar tricks could be termed the reverse stunt: Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," for instance, is speeded up into a fingersnapping brassy strut. (On Rock Swings, Anka had famously done the exact opposite with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," slowing it down to a loungy pace.) But hey, if it's not broken! After all, Anka is in fine vocal form and he sure knows how to sing against the big-band arrangements. Once again, the best songs are the most unexpected, like the strutting take on the Killers' "Mr. Brightside," the triumphant read of Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You," which gradually builds up, the super-lush cover of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World," and the strutting "Walking in Memphis." Note that Anka actually picked from his own oeuvre for the albums's two duets: Michael Bublé joins his onetime mentor on 1958's "You Are My Destiny," while Bon Jovi helps out on "My Way" (a song Anka adapted from a French original)--which paradoxically is the least convincing track in the bunch. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5.0 out of 5 stars Genuine swinging pleasures . Paul rocks !, Aug 29 2007

This review is from: Classic Songs My Way: 50th Anniversary Edition (2CD) (Audio CD)
In the past Frank Sinatra tackled pop songs of the day.
Frank may be gone but Paul Anka is carrying on with the big band swing sound. 2007 marks Paul Anka's 50th anniversary in music; to commemorate the occasion he has recorded an very good album, in which he tackles some favourite songs, covering the gamut of his own greatest hits, to elite singer-songwriters, ballads, pop and adult contemporary classics.
This very heartfelt and personal project covers the softer turf of Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell and, well, Anka himself.
Does it work?
Well kinda.Whatever you may think of this album there is no doubt that Mr. Anka is playing the whole thing completely straight.
In the midst of a 60-year career that's included a phenomenal 126 albums and more than 900 original songs, the former teen idol, whose own songwriting credits include one of Frank Sinatra's signature tunes and the theme for The Tonight Show, has decided to "expand things a little. I wanted to take songs from different genres that I could turn into ballads".
He does seem to be genuinely interpreting these songs in a very well- arranged manner. The arrangements and musicianship in the big-band accompaniments are so good, lush and swinging that they are now lodged in my mind and I have forgotten how the originals sounded. Paul has made these songs his own.
His versions of Joel's "I Go to Extremes" and Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" are particularly good and make these songs really quite interesting.
Cyndi Lauper's "Time after Time", Duran Duran's "Ordinary World", Daniel Powter's "Bad Day" and The Killers' "Mr. Brightside" really swing !
The best track, however, is his new rendition of his own "You Are My Destiny", a hit for Anka back in 1958.
It's a pleasure to hear Paul duetting with latter-day crooner and fellow Canadian Michael Bublé.
Just for the record, Paul Anka co-produced Michael Bublé's first album along with David Foster and this time Michael returns the favour by joining his swing mentor.
The weirdest and least convincing track by far is just the closer "My Way", on which he duets with who appears to be the biggest surprise of the album, Bon Jovi.
Other songs are growing on me with every play.
"...Piloted by thoughtful arrangements and Anka's still-youthful, fully intact voice, "Classic Songs" bridges the generation gap like blue jeans and iPods". --Kerri Mason- Billboard
You need to hear it to believe it.
Enjoy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, Feb 11 2008

I bought the special edition for the original hits and whilst "My heart sings" and "My home town" appear in stereo, "Put your head on my shoulder" and "Puppy love" are in mono which is very disappointing as they were in stereo on rhino's and time life's releases many years ago. Why didn't they use all the stereo masters they have?
