Disappointing Adaptation of a Classic

It's a shame more effort wasn't put into retelling this classic adventure. It stands in stark contrast to the excellent Classic Starts retelling of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which keeps the charm of the original while simplifying the writing to make it more attractive to young readers.
This adaptation is a borderline disaster, however. It strips almost all of the personality from the characters and simply presents the adventure as a series of sequential events that have little to no bearing on the characters' inner development. What we're left with is more a Cliff's Notes version than a kid-friendly retelling.
The Classic Starts series is generally pretty good, but not this one.

Engaging adventure story!

My husband and I just finished reading the Classic Starts version of Journey to the Center of the Earth to our 6 year old son. It was a very engaging adventure that really kept our son's attention, and we both had a lot of fun reading the book to him, as well. By comparison, the Classic Starts King Arthur was not nearly as well written, and it didn't keep our son's attention, either. This classic start left us wanting to read the unabridged version. And I'm sure when my son is old enough, he will be inspired to pick up the unabridged version as well. I took off 1 star because the character development seemed a little lacking. I'm sure this is due to the very condensed nature of the book. But, overall, the adventure and thrill of the story were definitely maintained. I would highly recommend it as a read-aloud to a fun-loving, adventurous 6 year old boy!
