Product Description

From Amazon.com

Originally recorded for legendary producer Bert Berns' Bang label, this collection documents the mid-'60s period when Neil Diamond was an emerging New York songwriter and apprentice pop star. Many of these hits have generated subsequent cover smashes--"I'm a Believer" (Monkees), "Kentucky Woman" (Deep Purple), "Red Red Wine" (UB40), "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon" (Urge Overkill)--but the originals remain the greatest. Produced by Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich, sublime singles like "Solitary Man," "Cherry Cherry," and "Thank the Lord for the Night Time" kept Brill Building rock on the charts during the British Invasion. Diamond would go on to become a '70s megastar, but many believe he has never equaled these recordings. --Ben Edmonds

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for Neil Diamond, Jan 24 2004

This CD features the best of Neil Diamond's recordings for Bang Records. Some people may be disappointed that some of his hits like "Sweet Caroline" aren't included, but that song was recorded for a different record company. This CD includes all his Bang Records hits, and that's good enough for me. This is my favorite period of Neil's career. You can't go wrong with songs like "Cherry, Cherry", "I'm a Believer" and "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon". I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Neil Diamond Early Years, May 8 2010

My parents had much of Neil Diamonds music on 8-track when I was a child. I always enjoyed his music so I bought this CD. This is a great music CD that covers early music not found on four other Neil Daimond CDs that I own. I also recommend 12 Greatest Hits volume II and Play Me The Complete Univeral Studio Recordings which is a 3 CD collection. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good material, but it's not enough, Sep 24 2003

Neil Diamond was one of the greatest rock stars of the sixties, but these days he has become forgotten. Why? HE'S ONE OF AMERICA'S GREATEST SINGER/SONGWRITERS! The mere fact that his music has become forgotten fills me with rage, because it's about a thousand times better than the junk that gets radioplay these days. This is their best known hits compilation. Read on for my review.

PROS:
-If you're the casual fan of Neil, it's doubtful this compilation will fail to please you, because most of the big hits are here for your listening pleasure. Among them are I'm A Believer, Red Red Wine, and Sweet Caroline.
-A plethora of underrated masterpieces can also be found here.
-This is an affordable compilation.
-Most major retailers of compact discs carry this compilation, so you shouldn't have to look to hard for it.

CONS:
-TALK ABOUT A CHEAT! Two of Neil's biggest hits, Cracklin' Rosie and Hello Again are MISSING IN ACTION!
-There's another major thing wrong with this compilation - its running length. It's only about thirty-five minutes long, and you can fit eighty minutes onto a single CD. They could've fit TWICE as many songs on this CD as they did.

OVERALL:
If you're a casual fan of Neil, then I suggest buying all his albums or getting a better compilation. This one just doesn't do him justice.
