Review

From The Back Cover: Climate Confusion is the best book length treatment of global warming science that is available to the literate citizen. The title says it all. Spencer explains the broad agreement over the existence of some climate change and the existence of some human role, but he also explains why these have little to do with the implausible and overheated projections of environmental disaster. The author thus cuts through all the rhetorical brickbats of denialism' and salvationism' to allow the citizen to reach rational conclusions. Despite a light touch, Spencer does not pull punches when it comes to unclothing the moral pretenses of many in the environmental movement - pretenses often disguising some truly immoral agendas. Richard S. Lindzen, Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Atmospheric Sciences "An outstanding discussion of the many scientific, political and religious problems associated with the acceptance that humans are the primary cause of global warming. A must read for anyone wanting a full and balanced understanding of the global warming debate." William M. Gray, Professor Emeritus, Department of Atmospheric Science, Colorado State University Roy Spencer's "Climate Confusion" is needed to put the global warming hysteria in its rightful place. He has done a yeoman's job in making the issue understandable and accessible to the general public without a sacrifice in the rigor of his arguments. Walter E. Williams John M. Olin Distinguished Professor of Economics George Mason University If you have an interest in global warming, but are intimidated by equations and scientific terminology, this book is for you. The author explores the philosophy of global warming (and cooling), examines the limitations of global numerical models for which all alarmist statements are based, and discusses the economics of alternative actions that might be pursued. This book is an excellent read! Neil L Frank Former Director National Hurricane Center --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Product Description

The current frenzy over global warming has galvanized the public and cost taxpayers billons of dollars in federal expenditures for climate research. It has spawned Hollywood blockbusters and inspired major political movements. It has given a higher calling to celebrities and built a lucrative industry for scores of eager scientists. In short, ending climate change has become a national crusade. And yet, despite this dominant and sprawling campaign, the facts behind global warming remain as confounding as ever. In Climate Confusion, distinguished climatologist Dr. Roy Spencer observes that our obsession with global warming has only clouded the issue. Forsaking blindingly technical statistics and doomsday scenarios, Dr. Spencer explains in simple terms how the climate system really works, why man's role in global warming is more myth than science, and how the global warming hype has corrupted Washington and the scientific community. The reasons, Spencer explains, are numerous: biases in governmental funding of scientific research, our misconceptions about science and basic economics, even our religious beliefs and worldviews. From Al Gore to Leonardo DiCaprio, the climate change industry has given a platform to leading figures from all walks of life, as pandering politicians, demagogues and biased scientists forge a self-interested movement whose proposed policy initiatives could ultimately devastate the economies of those developing countries they purport to aid. Climate Confusion is a much needed wake up call for all of us on planet earth. Dr. Spencer's clear-eyed approach, combined with his sharp wit and intellect, brings transparency and levity to the issue of global warming as he takes on wrong-headed attitudes and misguided beliefs that have led to our state of panic. Climate Confusion lifts the shroud of mystery that has hovered here for far too long and offers an end to this frenzy of misinformation in our lives. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Global Warming Skeptic Weighs In, Jun 11 2008

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Climate Confusion: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and Misguided Policies That Hurt the Poor (Hardcover)
According to news reports, scientists agree that humans are responsible, in large part, for global warming through greenhouse gas emissions and that these emissions should be significantly reduced before they cause global warming to escalate uncontrollably - to the detriment of the human race. But not all scientists: On the other side of the table are the so-called global warming skeptics, that is, those who disagree with part of what is being professed on this issue. The author, a climate researcher and meteorologist, is a self-proclaimed global warming skeptic. However, contrary to what many people may think, he points out that skeptics do agree that global warming is happening; they agree that carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere have increased as advertised and have likely contributed to observed increases in global average temperatures; and they agree that human activity is most likely what has caused increases in carbon dioxide concentrations. Where the skeptics disagree, the author claims, is mainly regarding the level of confidence that is placed on the theoretical computer models' predictions of future warming. He points out that there are too many unknowns and that weather and climate are so horrendously complicated that accurate predictions are not possible, at least for the present. The author covers a variety of issues that all come into play including: the basic science, alternate energy sources, politics, economics, policy matters, human nature, religion, etc. He emphasizes that any major actions taken now would have a very high cost for very little benefit and that monetary resources would be better directed at more pressing needs that can be more realistically remedied now.

The writing style is friendly, witty, authoritative and often sarcastic. Some passages in the scientific and economics discussions are rather involved and may require a bit of re-reading for them to sink in (as I did). Also, a few more diagrams would have been useful. This book would likely be of most interest to those who would like to understand more about global warming issues and who are open-minded enough to entertain both sides of this contentious topic.

4.0 out of 5 stars a voice of practical reason, Sep 18 2010

This review is from: Climate Confusion: How Global Warming Hysteria Leads to Bad Science, Pandering Politicians and Misguided Policies That Hurt the Poor (Hardcover)
Just received this book along with his new one 'The Great Global Warming Blunder'.Excellent writer & easy to follow. Definitely conservative in philosophy which is fine. He articulates well in the chapter on Economics how free markets are beneficial & preferable even in relation to weather & more pertinently the grave chance & probability of Draconian Laws & regulations being Implemented on unsound 'Alarmist' Propaganda masquerading as 'settled science',which WILL harm many , many people especially those in poorer lands & occupations.Chapter 7 (of CLIMATE CONFUSION) states:The Politics of Climate Change with a T of C subtitle suggesting "NO other public issue has so much potential for abuse of authority." I Totally Agree. Spenser very correctly points out on page 124 ...that 'while global warming might be portrayed as an enemy against which politicians from around the world can unite, it is more accurate to say that global warming is an opportunity to accomplish selfish goals that might never have achieved through legitimate means." Such as Global Governance.Be careful what you wish for you Alarmists...dictatorships are hard to remove once Entrenched. Also as one who lives in a northern local where it is somewhat cooler in the winter,I love the warmer of recent years, winters.I Prefer NOT to have Draconian Laws enacted which may very well force down winter temps to -40 degrees(or colder) again needlessly. The Natural Cycle I am ok with but mankind tweaking & Influencing weather patterns because of Alarmist, flawed & unproven paranoid fears(is despicable)& will almost certainly have detrimental effects on the colder northern. regions . Lets Let Nature take care of Its own Trends & Corrections as it has Cyclically done for longer & more effeciently than our 'experts' can do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and witty, Jun 8 2011
An excellent book! It is witty, sarcastic and funny as well as being informative and educational. Finally, a different point of view on Climate Change than what is being thrown at us every day through the media... by someone who really knows what he's doing; he's got a Ph.D. in meteorology.

It will give you the tools to understand better the different mechanisms of the Climate and Weather. It does not argue against Global Warming but rather makes a clear distinction between Global Warming and MANMADE Global Warming. It also takes a look behind the science to the politics, motivations and publicity AND ALSO the consequences involved in 'going green'.

A MUST READ for anyone subjected to the term Global Warming... which is to say, EVERYONE. Also, it's quite accessible... not too technical.
