Book Description

This will make your day!

A richly illustrated retrospective celebrating the life and films of Clint Eastwood—written by renowned film critic, and acclaimed documentary filmmaker, Richard Schickel and with an introduction by the legend himself.

Clint Eastwood is a Hollywood—and American—icon: beloved by critics and audiences alike, he has carved out a uniquely successful career that’s spanned more than half a century and sixty movies. Acclaimed as both actor and director, as well as for his musical compositions, he’s won multiple Oscars for his achievements in front of and behind the camera and has established himself as a true cinematic great.

This stunning volume presents a chronological look at his astonishing body of work, from the early “spaghetti westerns” to his iconic role as “Dirty” Harry Callahan in Dirty Harry (1971), to the soulful Bird (1988) and the revolutionary western Unforgiven (1992) through to more recent films such as the Academy Award-winning Mystic River (2003) and Million Dollar Baby (2004), and his latest picture, the rousing drama Invictus, starring Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman, which was released in December 2009.

Over 300 spectacular images, including dynamic stills from memorable screen performances and revealing behind-the-scenes photos, are accompanied by Richard Schickel’s incisive and illuminating commentary.

5.0 out of 5 stars This made my day!, Mar 4 2010
By Deborah Verlen "Deborah" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Clint: A Retrospective (Hardcover)
As you watch the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry movies or some of his westerns, do you ever find yourself quoting the dialogue along with Eastwood? Remember such pithy phrases as "Go ahead, make my Day," or my favorite "I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well to tell you the truth in all this excitement I've kinda lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum - the most powerful hand gun in the world and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question--Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk!" Then Clint: A Retrospective is for you!

Richard Schickel has written a wonderfully illustrated book that spans over sixty years of Clint Eastwood's varied career as an actor, a director, and an award winning individual who's achievements have touched most of us who like movies and television. If you are an Eastwood fan, the book will take you back to some of his best moments through photographs and commentary of movies he starred in or directed. What a wonderful way to spend an evening reading this book, looking at the photographs and taking a trip down memory lane.

Eastwood is a low key individual among a pool of actors and actresses that flaunt high profiles. It is easy to forget some of his roles, achievements, and why he has achieved the status of Hollywood icon and legend. In today's film climate where special effects often over shadow a film's story, this book lets us remember Eastwood as an actor and director who tells stories that you can relate to, that you can fall love with. As you look at the pictures and DVD, the stories that entertained you, had you crying, had you laughing, had you munching the popcorn as you cheered Eastwood as the hero or good guy--well it will take you back in an instant to the film and its story and what you were doing the night you watched it.

Schickel has done a wonderful job of creating an illustrated retrospective of Eastwood's career as well as providing commentary that will have you admiring Clint for his achievements and creating a picture of him that can have you imagining him sitting at your dinner table discussing his films and views on life like a friend or neighbor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, great book..., April 10 2010
By Mark A. O'Neill - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Clint: A Retrospective (Hardcover)
I'm a 44 year old, avid affectionado of any book on old TV shows, actors or movies I'm a fan of. I've been awaiting a book, such as this one, that covers Eastwood's movies, with accompanying photos. This book is no disappointment. It covers every movie, with photos from each. It's a rich book, and hardcover. And because the author knows Eastwood, it carries a great deal of legitimacy and authenticity in it's pages. If you are an Eastwood fan, this book is the ultimate reference guide to his movies...period.
I gave this book 4 stars, and do not want the following to detract from that; But I would love to read more. I would love to read the nitty, gritty details of the making of each movie, including Eastwood's take on the co-stars, and their take on him. It would be great to read about what kind of training Eastwood did, specifically, for each movie. Did co-stars ever get carried away with ad-libing or action, did fight scenes ever get out of hand...these are picky questions I'd love the answers to.
Though I generally agree with the author in his review of some of Eastwoods lesser movies, like Pink Cadillac and The Rookie, they are fun to watch. And I was glad "this" author didn't cite Eastwood as starting to look his age by "Dead Pool" (he only cited that others had suggested that). I've never understood that. Eastwood is, to me, like John Wayne; Be he 40 or 70, he can play the type of character he's famous for. And, I actually thought Eastwood looked younger in Dead Pool than in Sudden Impact.
Apparently, both author and actor chuckle at making another Dirty Harry. I tried, several times to get a now belated but beloved TV's MASH leader to organize a reunion show. I explained that the trouble with every other reunion show was that the producers never consulted the fans on how to do it. Often, fans know what's needed to capture the spirit of the original vehicle than anyone else. With Dirty Harry, I really don't know why Eastwood doesn't play even a minor role as a nameless guy in a cat and mouse thriller (no fights necessary), and only at the very end when Eastwood's character proved to be instrumental in solving the case, does another character tip us off as to who Eastwood's character was by saying something like, "Thanks, for your help, Mr Callahan".
Anyway, I digress. 4 stars for a great, great book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Giving Clint His Due!, May 4 2010
By Michael OConnor "Wordsmith" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Clint: A Retrospective (Hardcover)
Boy, who would have thought "Rowdy Yates" had it in 'im!?! From humble 'Rawhide' beginnings, Clint Eastwood has fashioned a film legacy second to none. That film record is give the once-over in this coffee-table tribute by film critic - and Eastwood friend - Richard Schickel.

After a 24-page summary of Eastwood's life and times, Schickel looks at the films Eastwood has starred in and/or directed/produced over the past 30-odd years. He explains each film's creation and development, describes how the shoot went and summarizes the critical/box-office reception. Write-ups vary from four to eight pages in length. Color and b&w photographs and poster art illustrate each film.

You have to give Eastwood credit. He's certainly tackled a wide variety of film projects and genres over the years. Not all have been box-office champs or award-winners. Yet, as Schickel points out, upon reflection, some of those 'misses' deserved better. Some, in fact, were gems that just didn't catch hold with the public or critics for one reason or another. 'Bronco Billy,' for example, seemed an odd film for Eastwood to star in but I loved it. It's a simple, sweet tale of a bunch of dreamers. Critics trashed 'The Outlaw Josey Wales' upon release but it's since gotten much better press. 'A Perfect World' tanked but it's actually one of Eastwood's best films and so on.

While neither exhaustive nor definitive, CLINT is a pretty good overview of Eastwood's output. Schickel's comments were fairminded and informed. Some of the text seemed repetitive, comments from the opening essay later appearing under the film being discussed. Overall, it's an appealing package sure to please Eastwood fans. Recommended.
