3.0 out of 5 stars Vacuous? Or just ironic? Not sure what to think..., Dec 6 2006
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Clique Collection (Paperback)
I started reading The Clique because one of my best friends read the first book and loved it. At first I hated the book - it didn't seem particularly well written. Also, there was a huge amount of reliance on designer labels (which meant nothing to me): in these books it's impossible to read a page without seeing names such as Jimmy Choo, Ralph Lauren and Burberry dropped casually into the text.
Plus, there didn't seem to be any characters I could identify with, and all the characters seemed to lead wildly improbable lifestyles. Coming from a middle-class British family, the idea of going out and spending $780 on a chiffon top (using Daddy's plastic) seems not only weird but obscene to me.
As I read on, though, I realised: these books might seem completely vacuous at first, but they're VERY addictive. Also, strangely, these books are very true to life. I go to an all-girls' school: in everyday life I hear rumours and encounter backstabbing, peer pressure and power games, and the by-play between different cliques and girls who follow different trends. (At OCD the different styles are mostly defined as: It-Girl, Wannabee and Indie; at my school the styles are Hippie, Goth, Emo, Chav, Punk and Sporty. But anyway...)
I know from experience that some girls like to be in positions of power and have other girls at their control: I can tell you that being at the hands of an exclusive, tight-knit, catty clique is a horrible, very subtle form of bullying. And Lisi Harrison captures the world of peer pressure and the miserable little lives of the "mean girls" and their victims almost exactly.
So when Lisi Harrison writes about the lives of her make-up obsessed, impossibly beautiful popularity junkies, is she writing ironically about the complicated lives that girls lead, their close friendships and intense dislikes, ultimately celebrating what it is to be female? Or is she writing a vacuous tale to please the real Massies, Kristens, Dylans and Alicias out there? I think this book falls somewhere in between: in some ways it's a celebration of friendship, but also what it says about how the girls cheat each other, their double standards and lack of morals is very worrying to think about - some kids reading this book are going to think that this is acceptable behaviour.
Read this book if you're a girl and have ever been bullied. Otherwise, don't. Just don't.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Read or to Not Read?, Dec 10 2006
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Clique Collection (Paperback)
I really enjoyed reading these books, but I don't feel like I can relate much to the girls except maybe Claire Lyons. I reccomend these books because they kept me reading past mid-night and they are just fun.

Claire Lyons is the infamous new girl from Orlando, Florida. She had blonde hair, bangs in their "in-between" stage, and blue eyes. Her father, Jay Lyons, was college buddies with Massie Block's father, William Block. So when they move to Westchester, New York, the Lyons family moves into the Block's guest house. She knows nothing about fitting in, designer clothing, or clothes referred to as "last season". Boy, is she in for a surprise.

Massie Block is the gorgeous, cruel, and the most popular girl at her girls-only private school, Octavian Day School. (OCD) She cracks funny jokes and can get out of the most bizarre problems. She wears designer clothes, is extremely rich, and hates it when people get in her way. So naturally, she hates Claire.

Alicia Rivera is Massie's beautiful second-in-command. She is known as the Spanish Beauty of the Clique and is richer than Massie. She desires to be the "alpha" or the first-in-command, which is utterly impossible...or is it?

Dylan Marvil is the red head of the group. She is obsessed with her weight even when she is skinny. She can be funny sometimes though. Her mother is the host of a popular celebrity show. Dylan uses her mother's talk show as a threat to people who mess with her.

Kristen Gregory is the sports chic of the Clique. She appears to be rich at first, but it is later revealed that she isn't as wealthy as she seems. She likes word games and looks like the good one in the group but she can be one of the most cruelest at times.

I gave these books four stars because it is just plain crazy. A lot of it seems way too unrealistic and the books begin to get a little old after reading a few of them. Lisi Harrison also seems to like describing the girls clothing a little too much. It's hard to tell if these books have a moral or if they just go on and on about rich girls lives. Yet, they are still very interesting and fun and are worth taking the time to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Review of Clique, Sep 19 2006
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Clique Collection (Paperback)
The Clique
The book I read is Clique. The main characters are Massie Block, Claire Lyons. Massie Block she's the ruler of the clique and of the rest of social scene. Claire is Massie's dad's best-friends daughter and is living in Massie's guest house and Massie hates her and Claire will do anything to try to fit in. She is living with Massie cause her dad can't afford a house right now. Even if Massie doesn't like her she will do anything to fit in with the popular kids. Claire just moved from California. Dylan Marvel Alicia Rivera, Kristen Gregory are Massie's friends. Massie and Clair get in a fight because Claire wants to be in there group and Massie doesn't want her to be in it. Massie's Friends kind of like Cassie but since Massie doesn't then they don't really like her. Basically this book is about Cassie and Massie and Cassie will do anything just to be in her group but Massie doesn't like her so she won't let her.
