I've read Clare's Mortal Instruments series before and absolutely loved them! So when I first heard she was making a prequel series I was very excited. I just don't know why it took me so long to read it when I loved Clare's previous series so much.

Well as it turned out, I loved this series just as much as the first one. And the biggest reason for that, as it was for the Mortal Instruments series, is the characters. The characters all just have so much personality and when you see them blended together - no matter what they do I always find it interesting because I want to know what they say next and how they deal with situations and other characters.

Though I'm not sure if others noticed but a few characters from Clockwork Angel reminded me of characters from the Mortal Instruments series. Jace reminded of Will, Simon of Jem and Isabelle of Jessamine. Perhaps it doesn't matter too much to people who haven't read either series before but to people who've already read one series it is a bit odd. Not that it really bothered my reading experience, just musing I suppose. Though I hope that if Clare writes more books in the future (which I really hope she will) she'll not make new characters too much reminiscent of her old.

As with the Mortal Instruments, Clockwork Angel is very humorous, I just found myself bursting with laughter as I read through the book. I loved the character dialogue, you could instantly recognize each character simply because of the dialogue. As I said, Clare is very good at showcasing her characters.

In book one of this series, the main character, Tessa, discovers that she is more than human. When her aunt dies in America, Tessa receives a letter from his brother to come live with him in England. She gets to England and gets captured by bad people, then saved by good, although troubled, people and she learns that she has the power to change appearances.

She is welcomed to live in a big house with a race of warriors/police, with their own problems: the leader is a small woman and at the time of the novel, small woman are neither leaders nor warriors, the husband is the typical crazy scientist, Tessa's love interest has a dark secret that it is not discovered in this book ... so it seems that the relationship might take a few books to flourish, there is also a best friend with a sickness and an unhappy girl and a bunch of servants who are more than servants.

One of those books you cannot put down, and must reread ... but if you are impatient you might decide to wait until the rest of the series is published before you start reading, because there is not real ending ... the writing just stops.

(May Contain Spoilers)

I had finished reading The Moral Instruments series earlier this year and it's become one of my favorite series. So I was itching to read Clockwork Angel, the first book in a new series by Cassandra Clare.

I remember when I read City of Bones and the way Clare described New York inhabited by Downworlders, it had that New York City urban feel but with a darker side. It's the same feeling I got when I read Clockwork Angel. The Victorian London in this book feels really authentic to me. I loved the way she described in detail all the busy streets in the daytime and the dark deserted streets illuminated by gaslight at night. Its so easy to get lost in Clare's world and its one I enjoy returning to over and over again.

I really liked the new characters and each of them had different traits that intrigued me. All her life, Tessa has thought she was a regular girl and she finds out she has a special power that no one else in the world has. She's thrust into London's Downworld of which she knows nothing about. During the course of the story, the reader gets to learn with Tessa as she learns about the Shadowhunters and Downworlders and she eventually comes to grips to who is really is. Shadowhunter Will Herondale is mysterious and a little tortured. Not much is revealed about his background and some of the decisions he's made. He also seems to be harboring a secret from his past and by the book's end its still unclear what Will's motives might be. Jem and Will are best friends and they look out for one another. He's the character I felt bad for because he has a disability that hinders him. There's the beginnings of a love triangle starting to form between these three main characters...

I could not get into this book for some reason and ended up not getting the sequels. It just didn't do it for me.
