I love it when someone comes from nowhere and completely redefines how you listen to a certain genre of music. Nuno Canavarro, Autechre did it to electronic music. Arvo Part, Steve Reich, Penderecki to classical. Esbjorn Svensson Trio to jazz. Talk Talk, Radiohead and... Patrick Watson - rock? What? Where? Who is Patrick Watson? Well, let me tell you, I have no idea who Patrick Watson is. But I sure treasure this album. The first thought on the first listen of the first song was 'indie rock'. And it was filed appropriately, and I didn't return to it for a few months. Then I listened to it again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again.and again. and again. and again. and again.and again. and again. and again. and again.

This creative artist is the critic's darling for the moment, and granted he is very creative and interesting.Ultimately, he fall shorts of creating great MUSIC by being too "creative" , unstructured, scattered, etc... Also, as a guy, I am a bit put off by his "sensative guy" approach that buries his masculinity in faviour of an emotional, creative, hodge-podge... In small doses -- refreshing and engaging...BUT does anybody (even those critics) actually sit and listen to this "music"? Nope.

Here is my reccomendation, the first few times you put this album on, don't really listen to it. Just let it play in the background, eventually, it will jump up and grab you without you realizing it.Patrick Watson is a beautiful pianist and has an incredible clasically trained voice. Vocally reminds me of Jeff Buckley but the music is far more complex and moving. Grabs you by the cockles. BUY THIS.
