4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better "monster" movies I have seen. April 5 2008
By KF
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this movie, and I think a big part of the reason is the way it was marketed. There was a lot of mystery, they showed you a decapitated Statue of Liberty on the movie poster, they showed us people running terrified in the streets, but they were careful not to show you what was causing all of this horror. This sparked my curiosity to the point where I just had to see this film, and I was glad I did.

One of the great things about this movie (in my opinion) is the fact that it is made to look like it was filmed with a hand-held camcorder. It has a "home movie" feel to it and that makes the events depicted seem more real.

This film is short and sweet (about 1hr. 15min.) so it doesn't drag on like a lot of movies. I really delivers in the action department. The special effects are well done, the Statue of Liberty gets mangled (as you know), and the Brooklyn Bridge gets destroyed (along with countless other NYC structures), and then there is the monster, which almost looks like a... Okay, I am not going say what the monster looks like, because that would spoil the fun, but it is interesting when it is finally revealed. It leaves you thinking at the end, and that is all I want to say, because I don't want to write a spoiler here :)

If you are looking for a movie with some deep and meaningful or romantic plot, go buy something else. Basiclly, Cloverfield is an entertaining and fun monster movie. If you are into this kind of movie, you have to check this one out!

3.0 out of 5 stars Godzilla meets Blair Witch April 27 2008
By Matthew King TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
This movie combines the shaky amateurish camera feel of movies like Blair Witch project, with monster-run-amok in NYC movies such as Godzilla and King Kong. It's an interesting concept that is done fairly well here. The strength of this movie is in showing images that completely shock and appear out of left field, of course with the filming style you get the impression it's real. The downside would be a lack of originality, some of the images seem to be pulled right out of footages of 9/11 events and the aforementioned Godzilla movie. Also, we don't get any kind of explanation as to where the heck a monster like this might have come out from and why it would just happen to choose NYC as it's coming-out party. "Cloverfield" is decent entertainment that will keep you on edge but the logistics of trying to comprehend this movie are ultimately very frustrating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Monster Movie July 13 2009
Format:DVD
Monsters are scary, of course; but Cloverfield shows us that the only truly terrifying thing is letting down the one you love.

Highly recommended. Must be seen twice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Another Hollywood Hole In The Head
This movie is so bad it comes with an apology and a free bowl of soup. Using a hand grenade as a laxative would be more entertaining! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!

I rented this movie recently and the camera moving all the time gave me motion sickness. You never see what's happening. I can't see why anyone would spend good money on this. Read more
