3.0 out of 5 stars Godzilla meets Blair Witch April 27 2008
Format:DVD
This movie combines the shaky amateurish camera feel of movies like Blair Witch project, with monster-run-amok in NYC movies such as Godzilla and King Kong. It's an interesting concept that is done fairly well here. The strength of this movie is in showing images that completely shock and appear out of left field, of course with the filming style you get the impression it's real. The downside would be a lack of originality, some of the images seem to be pulled right out of footages of 9/11 events and the aforementioned Godzilla movie. Also, we don't get any kind of explanation as to where the heck a monster like this might have come out from and why it would just happen to choose NYC as it's coming-out party. "Cloverfield" is decent entertainment that will keep you on edge but the logistics of trying to comprehend this movie are ultimately very frustrating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Je suis étonné! June 30 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better "monster" movies I have seen. April 5 2008
By KF
Format:DVD
I really enjoyed this movie, and I think a big part of the reason is the way it was marketed. There was a lot of mystery, they showed you a decapitated Statue of Liberty on the movie poster, they showed us people running terrified in the streets, but they were careful not to show you what was causing all of this horror. This sparked my curiosity to the point where I just had to see this film, and I was glad I did.

One of the great things about this movie (in my opinion) is the fact that it is made to look like it was filmed with a hand-held camcorder. It has a "home movie" feel to it and that makes the events depicted seem more real.

This film is short and sweet (about 1hr. 15min.) so it doesn't drag on like a lot of movies. I really delivers in the action department. The special effects are well done, the Statue of Liberty gets mangled (as you know), and the Brooklyn Bridge gets destroyed (along with countless other NYC structures), and then there is the monster, which almost looks like a... Okay, I am not going say what the monster looks like, because that would spoil the fun, but it is interesting when it is finally revealed. It leaves you thinking at the end, and that is all I want to say, because I don't want to write a spoiler here :)

If you are looking for a movie with some deep and meaningful or romantic plot, go buy something else. Basiclly, Cloverfield is an entertaining and fun monster movie. If you are into this kind of movie, you have to check this one out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Compelling Monster Movie April 4 2008
Format:DVD
There are many things being said about Cloverfield and most of them are good. I don't want to retread many of the points other people have made, but because I saw this last night and absolutely loved it I'm probably going to cover some things that have already been said. Suffice to say, Cloverfield, along with perhaps the South Korean monster movie gem The Host, is without a doubt the best monster movie to come a long in a very long time. Were it not for the persistent "shaky" camera work criticisms it's getting, I would expect Cloverfield's reputation to enter the Jaws echelon in the coming years. It had reached that degree of horror and suspense for me but time will tell.

Cloverfield is intentionally framed in a very unique way. The audience becomes aware that what they are watching is supposed to be real recovered footage taken on the film's main character's camera. His name is Rob Hawkins and some of the earlier footage on the camera shows him with his girlfriend Beth. The more recent footage shows a surprise going-away party in Manhattan that Rob's friends and his brother Jason threw for him after he got a promotion. He is ultimately relocating to Japan. We find that Rob is no longer with his girlfriend at the time of the party, and just as Rob's friend Hud (the guy filming most of Cloverfield) and his brother talk him into patching things up with Beth, something goes very wrong in Manhattan. What happens after we meet these people, and maybe even begin to care about them for 84 minutes, is where the horror begins. I'm not going to say anything else about the film, because it is entirely worth seeing without knowing anymore than I have already revealed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than you'd expect, but not a blockbuster Jan. 19 2014
Format:DVD
My 13 year old son wanted this as a gift. So I sat and watched it with him. Not a move I'd watch again, but I enjoyed it enough and my son loves it. ps. it's not for every 13 year old.

By Jenny J.J.I. TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
Now that all the hype has die down I was able to give this film an objective look. I have to admit I was impressed. This movie throws out the music, set-ups, and cheap scares out the window - in a good way. Nothing in this movie tells you you're watching a movie of course. You're completely disorientated from start to finish, completely uncomfortable and on edge. And that is a hell of an achievement in today's de-sensitized movie environment. While I didn't jump once, I did find myself clutching the chair arms at various points.

I see why viewers would fine this derivative but every monster movie cliché is in there, and so it should be. The monster destroys landmarks. The military fight the monster. News reports advancing the plot. But it's delivered with such style and such punch that you can't help but be awed. You're seeing these events on an ant's eye level. There are no sweeping special effects shots of the White House being demolished by aliens, no aerial shots of buildings being destroyed - instead we get distant, unidentifiable bangs, fires obscured by the cityscape, an enormous leg moving behind a skyscraper - and a distant object which comes hurtling through the air, finally landing amidst chaos in a street, revealing itself to be the head of the statue of liberty.

This personal touch goes deeper - characters disappear from the story, and we (the audience) don't know their fate because the main characters don't. To be honest, I don't know whether I love this or like it but I was impressed. The subway scene was probably the best bit for me, and the ending slightly disappointed.

This movie is so bad it comes with an apology and a free bowl of soup. Using a hand grenade as a laxative would be more entertaining! SAVE YOUR MONEY!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not a Monster Movie
Monsters are scary, of course; but Cloverfield shows us that the only truly terrifying thing is letting down the one you love.

Highly recommended. Must be seen twice.
