While the latter film was one of the funniest comedies of the last five years, "Club Dread" is so spectacularly unfunny that it makes you wonder if "Super Troopers" was a fluke.
At its core, "Dread" seems a parody of slasher flicks in general and of "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" in particular. The killer on the loose at a tropical resort plotline is lifted directly from that earlier film.
But the movie fails to elicit even a single chuckle. Part of the problem is that many scenes are way too violent for a comedy. In fact, the killings are generally played straight and are bloody enough to fit right into any modern slasher film. At the same time, all the lame jokes keep things from getting too serious.
The end result is a movie that is schizophrenic in that it seems to want to work as a horror film AND as a comedy. Ultimately, "Club Dread" is too violent to be funny and too much of a wanna-be yukfest to be truly frightening.
In trying to achieve two goals, the movie fails at both.
The performances of actor/director Jay Chandrasekhar and the other members of Broken Lizard lack the anarchic glee and razor sharp wit that made "Super Troopers" a "must see and then see again" classic. Bill Paxton plays an always-sloshed Jimmy Buffet-style singer whose resort is the center of the action. One wonders if he wasn't drunk out of his mind, when he agreed to this role.
I have high hopes for Broken Lizard and hopefully their third film outing will see them on surer footing. As for this movie, a better title would be "Club Dreadful."
there was next to no plot.lots of nudity, drunk people doing really
silly things.and of course a psycho killer stalking people.there are
lots of crude and raunchy situations, which, depending on your taste, may
not be a bad thing.i think it's basically a parody of your typical
slasher flick.the style of the movie(if you can call it that)reminded
me of the very early Friday the 13th movies and also April fool's
Day.as a parody,i think it does work.i did not find it insanely funny
or anything, but i did find the absurdity of it somewhat amusing.there
is not much in the way of acting involved,or even necessary here.it's
just that type of movie.anyway,at some point,i did become engrossed in
the film, and was curious as to who the killer was.and believe me,there
were a lot of suspects.this movie was sort of like a train wreck.i just
couldn't stop watching.slightly entertaining,at times,but just
barely.by the way,for a movie that is just as raunchy and crude, and
also hysterically funny, you might want to check out Repli-Kate.as for
Club Dread, my rating is a 2/5
There seems to have been some confusion as to whether or not this was a horror movie. I cannot begin to comprehend how anyone could see it as such. Gore does not equal horror. Is it scary? No. Is it supposed to be? No. It is just a horror parody, much like the "Scary Movie" series but not as broad and zaney.
I do really like Broken Lizard as a comedy ensemble. They play off of each other really well. The timing is great, the humor is silly. Each one of them really has something that compliments the group as a whole. I also really like quite a bit of the writing. Some of it is kind of stupid, yes. But it always stays away from all Hollywood cliche and it sounds fresh - as in, not stale, like most of the Tinseltown cookie cutter crap that calls itself comedy.
If you liked Super Troopers, you will like this movie less, but you will still like it. Good, silly, fun from good, silly comedians.

It's a pretty cool movie but the lack of interesting unrated content is disappointing. Recommended if you enjoy a good laugh.Published on June 18 2013 by Andrew Zhou

Super Troopers did a lot for me and it wasn't a classic but it was funny as hell. Zoom foward to Club Dread which in the complete end of it has stirred away from it's own pot. Read morePublished on July 19 2004 by Michael Bolts

The only two good things about this movie are: It has an end, and the girls who appear in it. The rest it's just a extremely boring film with more horror than comedy. Read morePublished on July 18 2004
I liked this movie. It helps if you have a clue who Jimmy Buffett is or some of the jokes aren't that funny. The characters are great also - like the security guard! Read morePublished on July 11 2004 by jon wesley
Well, I saw this movie completely based on the fact that Broken Lizard made it. Super Troopers was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. But they lost it with this movie. Read morePublished on July 11 2004 by Bryan
