Wyglinksi's Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks reviewed in the German-language magazine HF-Praxis

Book Description

This book gives comprehensive and balanced coverage of the principles of cognitive radio communications, cognitive networks, and details of their implementation, including the latest developments in the standards and spectrum policy. Case studies, end-of-chapter questions, and descriptions of various platforms and test beds, together with sample code, give hands-on knowledge of how cognitive radio systems can be implemented in practice. Extensive treatment is given to several standards, including IEEE 802.22 for TV White Spaces and IEEE SCC41.

Written by leading people in the field, both at universities and major industrial research laboratories, this tutorial text gives communications engineers, R&D engineers, researchers, undergraduate and post graduate students a complete reference on the application of wireless communications and network theory for the design and implementation of cognitive radio systems and networks.

  • Each chapter is written by internationally renowned experts, giving complete and balanced treatment of the fundamentals of both cognitive radio communications and cognitive networks, together with implementation details
  • Extensive treatment of the latest standards and spectrum policy developments enables the development of compliant cognitive systems
  • Strong practical orientation - through case studies and descriptions of cognitive radio platforms and testbeds - shows how "real world" cognitive radio systems and network architectures have been built
  • Additional materials, slides, solutions to end-of-chapter problems, and sample codes, are available at www.elsevierdirect.com/companions

Alexander M. Wyglinski is an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Director of the WPI Limerick Project Center, and Director of the Wireless Innovation Laboratory (WI Lab).

Maziar Nekovee leads cognitive radio research at BT (British Telecom) and is also involved in leading a number of large EU and International collaborative R&D projects on cognitive radio networks and secondary/dynamic spectrum access.

Y. Thomas Hou is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University ("Virginia Tech"), Blacksburg, VA, USA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview on the field of cognitive radio and recommended, Mar 3 2011
By Joel Avrunin "Electrical Engineer who loves S... - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice (Hardcover)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
The authors of this tome have taken on the task of covering the field of cognitive radio, a complex field that spans from technical to regulatory issues that an engineer or interested party must learn in order to undertake participation in the field. The book is written in a very clear and lucid style, with a well organized layout that is conducive to flipping open the book to a section and quickly reading the definition. By way of example, if you are M-Ary PSK or Slotted Aloha or 802.22, you can quickly flip to that section and get a sufficient overview to sound intelligent in a conversation. However the book goes far deeper. Each chapter gives you depth on not just implementation, but also history of development and where things are going in the future. The book includes algorithms and problems to give a comprehensive education on the field of cognitive radio.

A brief warning--the book is not geared towards the financial person looking to learn about the field or the engineer just getting into wireless. It presumes you are an electrical engineer, with not only an understanding of wireless communication, but also an understanding of software defined radio. There are some introductory chapters, but the reader who will gain the most will be coming to this book with a strong knowledge base. Without that base, I imagine the book will still be useful, but only about 20% of it will make sense. With those thoughts in mind, I recommend the book to those looking to learn about cognitive radio, but the beginners to wireless should likely look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough cognitive radio text, May 10 2012

Very well written and presented text on cognitive radio principals and design. The book delves into the details of radio design and implementation. It is geared toward electrical engineers with some experience in cognitive radio and students of the field. The book requires mathematical proficiency and prior knowledge in wireless communications. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Much Math!, Mar 21 2012
By Jerry Palmerino Jr - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cognitive Radio Communications and Networks: Principles and Practice (Hardcover)
Pre-release customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program
This book discusses cognitive radio. It is the capability of a radio system to dynamically analyze its environment to increase its effectiveness and efficiency.

This book reads like a calculus book. That is, however, reality. Universities describe cognitive radio as a "software defined radio with a cognitive engine brain." To do this, much like everything else in this world, a lot of math is involved.

The chapters include discussions of RF spectrum and regulation, cognitive radio fundamentals, spectrum sensing, access, and sharing, transmission techniques, optimization architectures, and security, to name a few. Each chapter is written by one or more industry professionals.

This is a brand new field and this book explores it in its entirety. Anyone who wishes to understand this filed would do well by reading this book.
