Product Description

Here is the album that many fans have been hoping Ryan Adams would make since his much heralded emergence with Whiskeytown. Though Adams has been as eclectic (and erratic) as prolific over his solo career, this double-disc gem delineates the possibilities of alt-country in 2005 while transcending the limitations typically associated with the genre. The organic arrangements of his new band, the Cardinals, blend acoustic and electric strains, sparked by the interplay between J.P. Bowersock on guitar and Asleep at the Wheel alumna Cindy Cashdollar on pedal and lap steel. With the set-opening "Magnolia Mountain," Adams and band draw inspiration beyond the title from the era of Neil Young's "Sugar Mountain" and the Grateful Dead's "Sugar Magnolia," though much of what follows shares as much in spirit with Bright Eyes (or even the poppier side of Prince) as it does with retro country-rock. On "Mockingbird Street," Adams builds from the stripped-down intimacy of a heartbeat toward the majesty of an anthem. Except for the rock and roll swagger of "Beautiful Sorta," the material exposes an open-hearted vulnerability, emotions that range from the rapturously romantic ("Cherry Lane") to the tremulously tender ("Mockingbird") to the broodingly bittersweet ("Rosebud"). On the engagingly uptemo "Let It Ride," Adams confesses to "27 years of nothing but failure and promises that I couldn't keep." This release represents promise fulfilled. --Don McLeese

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as every other Ryan album!, Aug 20 2005

I'll confess that this could be a slightly biased review. I love Ryan Adams. I'm a huge fan and it was inevitable that I was going to rate this album five stars. I'm not going to pretend that I just picked this album up randomly and I was amazed. As soon as I heard about the release of 'Cold Roses' I was counting the days to its release, and I was NOT disappointed.

Ryan has a very loyal fan base, made up of people who are fans of real music. They may all be fans, but there's a reason they are and this album is one of those reasons. 'Cold Roses' is another stellar effort from one of music's most amazing, talented, prolific songwriters to date. He might be crazy, he might be erratic, but he's one of very few people left in this crazy world who actually SUFFER for their ART (and it IS art for once, none of this manufactered, mass-produced machine "artists" who sing for the big bucks). There are quite a few standout tracks on this album; Magnolia Mountain, Friends, Cold Roses, Let It Ride, Meadowlake Street, Beautiful Sorta, How Do You Keep Love Alive - that all prove to the world that Ryan is a real, true, bonified singer/songwriter with so much to give. He might be feisty and deeply sensative, but it WORKS. I LOVE Ryan Adams. And I think everyone, for better or for worse, should hear this album. It's a real gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Muchos Deluxe, July 3 2006

Like the reviewer below, I too am biased when it comes to Ryan Adams, although in a different direction - I am NOT a fan of his solo work. However, his work with the Cardinals is first rate. In deciding to overcome my bias and buy one of the best albums in the past decade, I have been treated to material that sustains repeated listens, features stellar musicianship and is a display of some of the best song writing that a music lover can get his hands on.

Both discs showcase varied, yet coherent, tracks and are well worth a purchase. Thankfully I occassionally try out artists that I'm convinced I don't like.

I have never really listened to Ryan Adams much, only the most popular tunes in his impressively long catalogue. Driving across Newfoundland recently, my brother put it on and I fell instantly in love. At times the lyrics can be a bit wonky, but the pure lack of pretention, commitment to melody, and observance of feel and mood make this a staggeringly beautiful collection of songs about love lost. Highlights include the country-rock "Let it Ride", the one-two punch of "Blossom" and "Life is Beautiful," and the heartbreaking ballads "Meadowlake Street" and "How Do You Keep Love Alive." (Also take note of the phenomenal conclusion to "Cherry Lane".) Every song on these two albums is precious and should not be done without. I strongly recommend it (if you could not tell already.)
