Product Description

From Library Journal

For over a thousand years, the colonists of the planet Erna have struggled to gain control over a land prone to seismic instability and infused with a wild, near-sentient natural force known as "the fae." While sorcerers and adepts manipulate the dark and light sides of this power, the Church maintains its stance in opposition to its use. As the dark side of the fae grows in strength, feeding off the nightmares and greed of the minds that are drawn to it, four individuals form an unwilling alliance to battle the source of evil. Friedman ( In Conquest Born , DAW, dist. by NAL, 1978; The Madness Season , DAW, dist. by NAL, 1990) has produced a splendid hybrid of sf and fantasy in this first volume of a trilogy. Hauntingly memorable protagonists, high drama, and vivid world-building mark the beginning of what promises to be a magnum opus of the imagination. A priority purchase for fantasy or sf collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars An appreciable mix between science and fantasy, Nov 5 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Coldfire Trilogy #1 Black Sun Rising (Paperback)
The Coldfire trilogy, of which this is book 2, is very well written. It has strong characters with whom the reader can identify, and the setting is fresh. I don't normally like a merging of science and fanstasy. The two are seperate genres, one deriving from actual or close approximations of scientific understanding and speculation, the other drawing on the occult and mythological symbols. Fantasy is the antithesis of science, and so one cannot be considered a sub-genre of the other. I don't go for mixtures of the two in my reading. Freidman intrigued me when I read "In Conquest Born." That's why I picked up "Black Sun Rising," and its sequal. Needless to say, Freidman accomplishes the feel of fantasy while staying true to the premise of soft science fiction. I especially like the development of Tarrant's character in the second book, in particualr his devolution/evolution (?) from demon to slightly more human. His face to face confrontation with the God of his, indirect, making is poignant and moving.

3.0 out of 5 stars Black Sun Rising: Hope the tempo starts RISING in 2nd + 3rd, May 19 2005

This review is from: Coldfire Trilogy #1 Black Sun Rising (Paperback)
Although this novel has garnered many positive reviews, I do not believe it deserves such rich credit. I bought this trilogy solely based on the plethora of 5 star reviews and found myself sadly lacking in confidence over my transaction. "Black Sun Rising", was a formulaic fantasy at best; slow and grating, predictable and infruriating all at the same time. Friedman has taken what should have been a new and invigorating ideal in fantasy and given it the same pale complexity the likes of which Gerald Tarrant(Antagonist) supposedly wears. Speaking of which, here's another witty response, highly over-rated antagonist!. If you want a complex, dark natured antagonist fraught with an inner battle of good vs. evil but whom tends to lean toward the latter, read the, "Dragonlance Chronicles", trilogy in which you will meet one of the greatest chararcters in the fantasy genre, Raistlin Majere. Although it was an elementary trilogy with formulaic sub-plots, it was entirely enjoyable to read. In short B.S.R was a disappointing entrance to a trilogy, I can only hope it gets better from here on in of which all your other reviews persuade me to believe!.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOTALLY Addicting!, Mar 9 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Coldfire Trilogy #1 Black Sun Rising (Paperback)
My mother and a friend had been on my case for YEARS to read these books, and I never did until this summer. Now - I regret waiting that long! The book will make you laugh, cry, mad, happy, anxious, and so many more things! You can spend HOURS reading and think nothing of it!
It DOES take a little bit to get into it in the beginning. There is a lengthy introduction to a couple of the main characters... But it makes that much better throughout the rest of the book!

Once it gets going, it's all I thought about and every spare minute I had the book was in my hands! I'm reading #2 right now and can already see it building up again and can't WAIT to see where this journey takes me!!
