About the Author

Edgar Rice Burroughs, 1875-1950

Edgar Rice Burroughs is renowed for his many novels of fantastic adventure. Unquestionably his best-known creation is that of the jungle hero, Tarzan the Ape Man, but almost as well known are his stories of other planets beginning with the very popular Mars series. A torrent of novels followed: stories about Venus, tales of the Moon and of the middle Earth, westerns, and detective stories. In all, nearly one hundred stories bore Edgar Rice Burroughs' name.

Born in Chicago in 1875, he tried his hand at many businesses without notable success, until at the age of thirty-five, he turned to writing. With the publication of Tarzan of the Apes and A Princess of Mars, his career was assured. By the time of his death in 1950, at his home in a town bearing the name of his best known work, Tarzana, California over 40 million copies of Edgar Rice Burroughs books have appeared in 58 different languages.

Considering this book was written in around 1912, I'm really impressed with Mr. Burroughs interpretation of Science Fiction from the 1900's.
Great read.

Sadly incomplete Feb. 17 2012

Format: Paperback
Let me start by saying I adore the John Carter of Mars books; I've read them many, many times over the years and I was really looking forward to being able to have the entire series on my Kindle. But I cannot in good conscience recommend this edition because the books included are incomplete -- when the edition was assembled, Disney appears to have dropped the forewords written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. These forewords are actually integral to the stories -- they tell how ERB received the manuscripts, whether from his uncle John Carter or from Jason Gridley (who was also in communication with Pellucidar -- most of Burroughs' series are very loosely set in the same world) and not including them means a loss of flavor and in some cases an abrupt and confusing beginning to the book as it appears in this edition.

I highly recommend the John Carter books; I just recommend that you get them in an edition that preserves their original state.

One Star One Star!

These Volumes, WHILE BEAUTIFUL IN EVERY OTHER WAY, are INCOMPLETE!!! They do NOT include the introductions and forwards present in almost all of the books!!! THESE ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE JC STORY!!

Boycott these volumes until Disney makes them COMPLETE!

Thank You.
Classic tales of high adventure Feb. 1 2013

I was first put onto this series by curiosity over Disney's 'John Carter' film (which, it would seem, failed at the box office for reasons other than the quality of the movie). These are classic adventure stories of sweeping panoramas, fast swordplay, and dastardly villains with the hero being spurred on by the ultimate prize: the fair maiden.

Burroughs' prose is excellent and highly readable. It is more than possible to read through the entire book in one sitting without ever feeling fatigued or having to skip the 'boring bits', as there simply aren't any. This book is highly recommended for anyone who loves good, old-fashion (and clean -- I'm looking at you, Red Gloves) adventure stories and anybody who like Biggles or Tarzan should also thoroughly enjoy this.

These are some of my favorite books, and although I wasn't able to find a complete set of individual books for my nephew, like the set I got when I was a kid, I was very pleased to find all the books in these compilation versions. Thank you very much!

My hubby was obsessed with getting all the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. SO I got him this set. He loved it and the book looked nice.
It was cheaper to get this than buy each individually.
It was a god price and arrived fast.
Thank you
