Review

“V. S. Naipaul is the world’s writer, a master of language and perception.” —The New York Times Book Review

Product Description

For the first time: the Nobel Prize winner’s stunning short fiction collected in one volume, with an introduction by the author.

Over the course of his distinguished career, V. S. Naipaul has written a remarkable array of short fiction that moves from Trinidad to London to Africa. Here are the stories from his Somerset Maugham Award–winning Miguel Street, in which he takes us into a derelict corner of Trinidad’s capital to meet, among others, Man-Man, who goes from running for public office to staging his own crucifixion. The tales in A Flag on the Island, meanwhile, roam from a Chinese bakery in Trinidad to a rooming house in London. And in the celebrated title story from the Booker Prize– winning In a Free State, an English couple traveling in an unnamed African country discover, under a veneer of civilization, a landscape of squalor and ethnic bloodletting.

No writer has rendered our postcolonial world more acutely or prophetically than V. S. Naipaul, or given its upheavals such a hauntingly human face.

5.0 out of 5 stars Treasure trove of Naipaul, Dec 5 2011

This is a treasure trove. You can dive in to retrieve any story and it will be an enjoyable read and re-read. The characters in Miguel Street reflect real-life individuals I know (myself included!). Five stars for the pleasure it offers!

By the way, whatever novel you want to buy, get the Everyman's Library edition if available. The paper is cream, not glaring white, hence easy on the eye. The binding is strong and you can open any page flat without breaking the spine. Best of all, the editions are inexpensive! I am collecting as many Everyman title as I can afford, and throwing away the paperbacks which are turning into sawdust. For instance, I've just replaced the paperback Naipaul's Biswas with the Everyman Edition.

2.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, Sep 2 2011
By J. Velker "jjvrrrt900" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Collected Short Fiction (Hardcover)
I have nothing to say about the works that comprise this "collection"--enough has been written about them by qualified reviewers elsewhere. However, it should be noted carefully that this Everyman's Library edition DOES NOT, as suggested both by its title and by the editorial blurbs on its Amazon page, contain the entire "In a Free State". The primary, eponymous novella from "In a Free State" is in fact ABSENT from this hardcover omnibus, which only contains the shorter sketches from "In a Free State" ("One Out of Many" and "Tell Me Who to Kill"). This means that this edition only contains two complete works--"Miguel Street" and "A Flag on the Island".

Moreover, this edition also omits other titles in Naipaul's oeuvre that obviously qualify as "short fiction", such as "The Mystic Masseur" (207 pages), "The Suffrage of Elvira" (206 pages), and "Mr. Stone and the Knight's Companion" (125 pages). The omission is particularly regrettable in the final two cases, given that both are now out of print at least in the US.

So this is neither as advertised nor is it "complete" by any stretch of the imagination. A rare miss from the Modern Library.
