4.0 out of 5 stars Surprising Take on the Everyday, Aug 21 2010
By Kevin Rakestraw - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Collected Stories Of Beryl Bainbridge (Paperback)
I had never heard of Beryl Bainbridge until a few weeks ago when she unfortunately passed away. Being fond of short stories, I chose this book as a starting place for my introduction to her work. When I first began reading them, I thought the stories were comparable to similar stories by Updike and the like, which is not to say they were bad (I happen to love Updike), but they didn't stand out for me. Then I began to notice a pattern - while the stories themselves were likable though somewhat unremarkable, the endings of most of the stories were brilliantly surprising & clever. Ms. Bainbridge has this uncanny ability for telling an average story about average people, then surprising you with an unthought of ending, while still maintaining the story's believability & deeply human qualities. The writing quickly grew on me & I think I will be turning to this book for years to come.
