3.0 out of 5 stars Great Movies, Poor Quality DVDs, Nov 30 2011

This review is from: Cary Grant 4-Disc Collector's Set (Indiscreet / Operation Petticoat / The Grass Is Greener / That Touch of Mink) (DVD)
I love Cary Grant. I loved every movie I ever watched that he acted in, and these movies are no exception. Yes, some are better than others, but he is a superb actor and a pleasure to watch any day. However, the quality of the disks is shockingly appalling. Not only are the movies grainy, but they do not allow for wide screen expansion. Having a wide screen TV, most of my screen was black filler. This, of course, forced me to zoom the entire image, making it even grainier (pixellated).
So, the moves are OK, but the quality of the recording is awful! Your choice.

1.0 out of 5 stars Same shoddy transfers as in older releases... DO NOT BUY!!!, Jan 1 2008
By David Boulet - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cary Grant 4-Disc Collector's Set (Indiscreet / Operation Petticoat / The Grass Is Greener / That Touch of Mink) (DVD)
I'm appauled.

I just received the screener copy for review and am disgusted to find that this set contains exact duplicates of the already-released *embarrassingly bad* transfers of each of these films. None of them are anamorphic widescreen (all are 4x3-letterboxed widescreen) and they look like they were mastered for VHS on a 19" screen: blurry, noisey, hazy, full of every type of video artifact you can imagine (from print damage to poor compression to edge-haloing so bad it hurts your eyes).

avoid this set at all costs. And write republic and express your displeasure with another release of the same-old-crap. Why can't this studio do proper 16x9 high-definition transfers of these classics like every other studio is doing today?

1.0 out of 5 stars Republic Pictures Strikes Out Again!, Jan 2 2008
By Jim - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cary Grant 4-Disc Collector's Set (Indiscreet / Operation Petticoat / The Grass Is Greener / That Touch of Mink) (DVD)
I find it hard to believe that Republic Pictures is issuing these wonderful films in such a "garbage" format, AGAIN! A previous reviewer, David Boulet, indicated that he has previewed this set and it has been issued in the same old 4x3:letterboxed widescreen format, wich means when you view it on a 16x9 screen, you will have black bands at the top and bottom as well as on both sides of the picture.

When playing the first DVD versions of these films, I thought something was wrong with my TV or DVD player. I tried every option imaginable on both the TV and DVD player to get an acceptable image. I tried the zoom, stretch, expand, as well as standard and narrow, features on my 16x9 TV, all of which just seemed to amplify the horrible picture quality. I then tried changing the video settings on my DVD player in combination with each TV setting with equally bad results. I even tried playing the DVDs on three different DVD players and nothing helped. The fuzzy picture quality was so distracting that it was painful to watch.

My wife and I just love these movies, so sucker that I am, I bought them the second time they were issued expecting that no reputable company would perpetrate such an abomination on a loving public a second time. WRONG! It was the same hideous offering!

If David Boulet is correct about the reissuance in the same formt, then I have no intention of buying this set, and I would caution any prospective buyer to stay away from this product until Republic Pictures does the right thing and issues them in a truly remastered anamorphic widescreen version.

If anyone knows the responsible contact person within Republic Pictures (aka Republic Entertainment, Inc.), please post it in a review. Most correspondence to the corporate address ends up in a "black hole."

2.0 out of 5 stars No Closed Captioning on 3 of 4, Feb 10 2008
By wwwUncle - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Cary Grant 4-Disc Collector's Set (Indiscreet / Operation Petticoat / The Grass Is Greener / That Touch of Mink) (DVD)
I had bought these movies on their first DVD release a few years ago. I ended up returning all but "That Touch of Mink" due to lack of closed captioning contrary to the box labeling at that time. When these movies were released again in this 4 movie set I had thought the closed captioning would be there this time and did find the box claiming "CC" for the contents. Amazingly, they repeated the old errors so I returned the product. While checking the movies for closed captioning (or even subtitling), I noticed the overall quality of the movies is not good. It seems as no effort has been put into the reissue of these movies other than repackaging them in a 4 dvd set.
