A workmanlike conclusion to the six book cycle., Nov 1 2009
This review is from: Colonel (Paperback)
From the very beginning Rick Shelley delivers between the covers of these books almost exactly what is promised on the jacket - so why the lukewarm reviews from readers who have clearly willingly returned to the well five times?
So long as the tale was not told to its end, I always personally felt that the next book had the potential to elevate the whole tale, if only Lon Nolan could be a slightly more nuanced or complex character. If only the combat scenarios would be just slightly more engaging. If only the support characters could change and grow and assume the kind of relevance they always hovered just on the edge of providing. Each new book inched farther in the direction of achieving greatness, but fell just short.
Ironically, if I had been reviewing Colonel without the last page and a half, in which Shelley attempts to summarise the fate of the DMC, Dirigent, the Nolan family and the human race in toto, I would probably have given it 4 stars in anticipation of a putative next book, 'General'. Sadly, it seems Shelley finally lost patience with his own creation, and ended in mid-breath - finally killing off that nagging sense that the NEXT book was going to be absolutely awesome.
This series, for me, will forever remain a tantalizingly missed opportunity - and that cannot help but cause all my latent frustrations at poorly described Naval strategy, scrappy and seemingly unprofessional small unit tactics and one soldier's obsession about his son and dismayingly banal retirement to colour my review of this book.

Rushed ending to a decent series., Jun 27 2001
This review is from: Colonel (Paperback)
I enjoyed the Lon Nolan series and bought all of the books, even though they sometimes made you wonder why such a low tech approach to warfare was used. This is fiction after all so I don't get too picky. Most of this book was decent but the ending seemed so rushed. Like others, I expected there to be a book called General to finish the series, and was really looking forward to it since it would have involved an attack on Dirigent (the mercs home planet.) It seems like at the last minute Shelly decided not to do this and wrapped up the entire future of Lon in a few pages. That part sorely dissapointed me. I feel there is nothing worse than to end on a bad note, you tend to remember that more than what you enjoyed about the series and makes me not all that eager to read his other books. Too bad, I tend to be a very loyal reader.

General, Dec 9 2000
This review is from: Colonel (Paperback)
I enjoyed reading the series. It did not draw me in as much as the "Hope" series of David Feintuch, but I did enjoy the action and decisions of Lon Nolan. My greatest regret is that I was looking forward to General. I assumed since the General does not go out on contract, that the planet Dirigent would be attacked. Since Lon would be head of the military and state he would have to direct planetary resources as well as consider bringing men back already on contract. I am not sure why Mr. Shelly decided to end with Colonel.
