Book Description

Millions of people have learned to draw using the methods of Dr. Betty Edwards's bestseller The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Now, much as artists progress from drawing to painting, Edwards moves from black-and-white into color. This much-awaited new guide distills the enormous existing knowledge about color theory into a practical method of working with color to produce harmonious combinations.

Using techniques tested and honed in her five-day intensive color workshops, Edwards provides a basic understanding of how to see color, how to use it, and-for those involved in art, painting, or design-how to mix and combine hues. Including more than 125 color images and exercises that move from simple to challenging, this volume explains how to:

see what is really there rather than what you "know" in your mind about colored objects
perceive how light affects color, and how colors affect one another
manipulate hue, value, and intensity of color and transform colors into their opposites
balance color in still-life, landscape, figure, and portrait painting
understand the psychology of color
harmonize color in your surroundings

While we recognize and treasure the beautiful use of color, reproducing what we see can be a challenge. Accessibly unweaving color's complexity, this must-have primer is destined to be an instant classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Illustrator sees colour!, May 10 2005

I have Betty Edward's previous books, such as Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain, and I loved the layout. She brought that layout/teaching style to this book.
As an artist that uses pencil, conte, charcoal etc. to draw with, I had ignored the wonderful world of paints as a medium. So this red faced artist needed to go back
and understand colour theory. In the book she is giving you hands on projects that
enable you to apply the theory within that chapter for yourself.
As I have little painting experience I found this book very useful. It will stay as part of my library of the books to never get rid of or give away. I recommend it here and will recommend it to other artists I meet. Makes a great gift for any inspiring artists. :P

Art Of Using Color

I was delighted with the results I achieved by following the author's instructions, lesson by lesson. Theory is presented in an interesting way, how the human brain perceives colour, emotions attached to colour, and some basic history of colour theory. You are told what supplies to buy, and how to use them. You learn to really "see" colours, and how to mix them. To benefit from this book, one must treat it as a course, setting aside a time to read and practice the exercises. After I had taken the course, I was so pleased that I bought a copy for my grandaughter, who shows some talent for art. I do not. I learned how much of the artist's techniques are "teachable", Betty Edwards knows how to teach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Color by Betty Edwards: A Course in Mastering the Art of Mixing Colors, Jun 22 2011
This review is from: Color (Paperback)
This is a work book for colour theory. Like her other book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, you are meant to actually do the exercises in the book so that you learn what is being taught. I got this book out of the library first to check it out. I liked her approach. Since the exercises will take some time to complete and ,I bought the book.

I am looking forward to working my way through this.

It did take a bit of research to figure out what colours in the paint brand I use will correspond to her colour spectrum.
