Disappointed with this book entirely!,
This review is from: Colorwork Creations: 30+ Patterns to Knit Gorgeous Hats, Mittens and Gloves (Paperback)
The charts are charming, but only one size is offered for every pattern.80 stitches across the palm are required for every mitten/glove chart, and considering the usual number for a woman's mitten is 56-64 stitches, these mittens are as huge when finished as they appear on the models. The hats as designed are too tall and would look like gnome hats when done. Consider the pictures very carefully and you will see what I mean. So if you purchase this book, be prepared to sit with graph paper and reconstruct every pattern to fit anyone other than a man's large hand(and not too many men want to wear a mitten with a nuthatch or chickadee on it!)

great introduction to doubleknit patterns,
This review is from: Colorwork Creations: 30+ Patterns to Knit Gorgeous Hats, Mittens and Gloves (Paperback)
I enjoyed learning to make the mittens in this book. It took me a bit of experimenting to find a fine enough gauge yarn, but once i did the pattern turned out well. After making one pair I am eager to try other patterns. The sizes can be increased or decreased easily enough and I made up my own design to put in the block on the back of the mitten. The animals appear upside down when walking with hands at the side. Although this doesnt bother me, a friend commented on it. I want to make them for gifts. I enjoy following the graph but recommend photocopying the patterns because the book does not sit open like a spiral bound book would. I had never used the turkish cast on and found the internet helpful with explaining it. The photos and instructions otherwise seemed quite clear.

Some of the most delightful patterns available. I couldn't wait to try the cardinal hat, and combined several of her basic designs to achieve my goal. I expect to make many gifts using these designs, especially the "flip top" glove/mitten instructions, and the many wonderful charts for various birds, butterflies, etc. Patterns adapt easily for different yarn and needle choices. And you needn't limit yourself to small items, the charts work well for sweaters and other garments.
